IAN GILLAN: HIGHWAY STAR - A JOURNEY IN ROCK DVD

Hello,
Craig here from Coolhead, the makers of the IG documentary film.
The DVD should be out in either March or April (prob. March in Europe and April in the UK, due to promo commitments). TV sales are being handled by an agent and it seems we have SKY 1 interested in the UK and 9 other broadcasters around the world.
What can I say to you guys who waited patiently for an update from Coolhead? Sorry would be a start. I could also try and explain that until we knew exactly what was happening with the distribution of the film we were prevented from saying anything more than 'can't say much for now, sorry'. We did that once - more than once would've just been silly. And I could also say that we're filmmakers, not a PR company, and so this kind of thing is not really our forte.
Filmmaking is our forte, and what we've produced is bloody good. I'm a DP fan first and foremost and this is the closest you'll ever get to a definitive DP MKII documentary (unless we can pull something off with RB - who knows?). It's the kind of documentary that I always wanted to see from DP but all we had was HM Heroes (pretty dull); Classic Albums (nice but confined) and Family Trees (too short). I feel we've managed to get some real insight into the band.
Ours is very well shot and edited (editing alone took 8 weeks) and is pretty much all encompassing where the story is concerned. It may be IG's film but we insisted it be made with a certain amount of journalistic integrity, and so he doesn't come away completely scott-free. It also holds together well as a story, and not just for IG/ DP fans.
As for content... you have the main doc which runs at 2h28m (as a filmmaker I would have usually said this is too long but we tested it out on non-DP fans who said it held their interest throughout), and you have the bits we couldn't fit into the main doc. On disc 2 there's the Tour documentary, filmed in Russia and the UK, featuring concert footage (12 tracks I think - I can't remember now) and backstage antics; At Home with the Gillan's (a very short piece on the Gillan family); a piece called Drinkin', Smokin' and Messin' Around with Wimmin', which is made up of a few tales of alcohol-driven carousing; and GillanCam, a very funny 29m film distilled from many many hours of recordings from IG's own camera.
I think that's it... there may be a couple of bits I've forgotten.
Universal have it now and they're planning a new website to promote the film. Those who signed up to our website will get an update from them shortly telling them more about it.
As for a price tag of $78, the price has yet to be set (so don't pay out that much now!) but it certainly won't be that much.
Cheers!

It will be Gillan's definitive DP MKII documentary, so I guess it will be 2,5 hours of Blackmore slagging!

That is what I liked about the Machine Head doco. There wasn't any of that backstabbing crap. Sorry guys we don't want to hear **** about any member of the band ex or not. If it wasn't for those people there would not have been Purple.

- Except for Gillan's "humorous" comment on Blackmore's hat sending Bulgarian radiowaves through his head quite a lot... Maybe Gillan himself find his own Blackmore comments funny, but to me it just goes to show that he still is bitter so many years after the break up of MKII. I haven't seen any interviews with Blackmore since the break up where he slags off Gillan, but Gillan keeps on slagging Blackmore, one way or the other, in every interview he's been doing since '93. He even lies and construct his own truth to justify what he's saying.

In all fairness, Blackmore indulged in a fair amount of "Gillan Slagging" between 1988/89 & 1992, then again immediately after his own departure from Purple in '93 (I can direct you to links to read the texts of the interviews if you're interested)...on the other hand, though, and to Blackmore's credit, it seems to me that he's rather admirably restrained himself from such indulgencies for the last 4 or 5 years or so.
It's well past high time that Gillan did the same.

Can't wait for the release. The whole GillanCam and at home with the Gillan's ideas just make it one of those things I, as well as many other Gillan fans have dreamed about.

I always thought a "The Osbournes" reality show for DP, would be a good idea, so much fun off-stage stuff we never see. And Jon should be included as well, of course.
