Scarabus..thoughts
From a vocal standpoint....Gillan was overpowering on this album....his voice was incredibly sharp and I've played certain songs from this album (to Gillan fans) and one reaction was this goes to prove Gillan was the most powerful rock singer ever....now I don't know if I'd go that far but he certainly was impressive on numbers like Scarabus and Fool's Mate.....
also does anyone have a remaster of Clear Air Turbulence....if so how's the sound over the original mix....Money Lender was always a fav of mine...and the reason for my handle....

Re: Scarabus..thoughts
IMO, Gillan entered his prime with SCARABUS, a prime that would take him all the way through BORN AGAIN. I always liked CLEAR AIR TURBULENCE and SCARABUS, and wouldn't have minded another album from the IGB; they were truly a superb collection of musicians. Gillan, the band, never really had the same level of musicianship. But I still love the energy of albums like GLORY ROAD and FUTURE SHOCK, something Rainbow and Whitesnake were sorely lacking during those days.

Re: Scarabus..thoughts
ian is a great artist but if he hasn't got the right people backing him he's 'not great'. his choice in musicians has not always been great. thats why Purple and Gillan are fantastic and some of his other stuff is not.
scarabus is a good performance but its not a great album. when you've been going for 40years i think your going to slip a bit now and then.
the funny thing is most artists are better when they are younger, but Ians better now in a lot of respects.

Re: Scarabus..thoughts
I'm not a big fan of Scarabus. I much prefer the first four songs on CAT which are of my favorites in Gillan's repertoire.

Re: Scarabus..thoughts
"Scarabus" was my favorite of the 3 IGB studio albums.

Re: Scarabus..thoughts
It was a bit transitional, you could tell he wanting to rock, but was keeping with the band.
Twin exhausted just so happens to mention a Barracuda... now I can't ask for too much more significance than that.

Re: Scarabus..thoughts
I got this a couple months ago (it was lost in the mail for 30 years) and like it a lot. It’s a bit over-produced/busy for my sensibilities and I’m not a fan of the synthesizer but underneath it’s actually a pretty good southern rock record ie. The Allman Brothers-like jazz/rock although I can imagine Skynyrd doing Mercury High. I’m still trying to sort out the who was where when and why of his discography but I’ve heard a lot that I like. Hope he’ll find the time to maybe do another solo cd (we’re not getting any younger). The Dixie Dregs haven’t impressed me much (I prefer music that has a discernible beat) but this seems more like the kind of music Steve Morse would be really good at.

I only have the Metal Blade remaster from 1988, but it sounds fine to me. For an interesting take on Clear Air Turbulence, check out The Rockfield Mixes. That's the original version of the album. Ian didn't like the sound and took the master tapes to his studio, where he remixed them. That's the version that was released. Many years later, Ray Fenwick arranged for the original mixes to get released. They are much warmer and richer than the official version, with some interesting differences in instrumentation.

Re: Scarabus..thoughts
I've got Child in Time album in intense play right now. Of course, nowdays "intense play" means listening to it once in three days.
Just listening to the album again. The slide guitar stuff on Shame and My Babe Loves Me are pure Little Feat!

That was the next one on my list.
