I've got Child in Time album in intense play right now. Of course, nowdays "intense play" means listening to it once in three days.
Just listening to the album again. The slide guitar stuff on Shame and My Babe Loves Me are pure Little Feat!
That was the next one on my list.
Excellent!
Another Gillan album I've been spinning many times over the Easter was Mr. Universe. A very good album.

Re: Scarabus..thoughts
I just listened to Scarabus yesterday and thought what an absolutely underratet gem of an album it is!
I really like it, but Clear Air Turbulence is still the only masterpiece IGB made.

Re: Scarabus..thoughts
Now I've got Future Shock playing. Not as good as Mr. Universe, but still good.
One of these days I will put Scarabus on!

Re: Scarabus..thoughts
My favorite IGB album. Lyrically excellent. Twin Exhausted is so clever with it's references to tired relationships and motor sports. Mad Elaine has one of the coolest riffs and grooves - pentatonic heaven! I've got a reissue with a live version of My Baby Loves Me that is absolutely smoking.

Re: Scarabus..thoughts
I have it and have never been a big fan of it. I really never thought that his vocals at that time fit that genre. His Episode Six voice would have been much better. His voice had become much more suited to hard rock by the mid-seventies than the IGB tunes.
I was never a big fan of Gillan's jazzy stuff, for that matter. I think that he really took-off after abandoning the IGB crap and embracing good, hard rock with 'Gillan'.

Re: Scarabus..thoughts
Have you seen the japan 1978 tv-gig? It's got poor picture and sound quality but good enough to feel the vibe. Starts with Secret of the dance.. Ian is soooo awesome there, especially SOtD!

Totally agree Big Ian was on fire at that time this was the Ian Gillan that blistered the walls in 70s DP!!!Strange that his voice seemed to lose quite a bit of range and power in the following 2/3 years i have often wondered whether this was due to medical reasons or simply natural ageing and Ians lifestyle catching up with him? dont get me wrong i thought his voice was still great during the Gillan years but just not as good as it had been in his prime

Re: Scarabus..thoughts
The IGB era is by far my least favourite part of Ians career I quite enjoy the CIT album but hated both CAT and Scarabus as well as the Live at the Budokan album they quite simply bored me almost to tears whilst I appreciate that the musicianship was of high quality I much preferred the hard rock of the band Gillan some say(not me) that the musicianship was not of as high a quality as the IGB but there was so much freshness and energy in this band something that was clearly lacking in the self indulgent meanderings of the IGB which for me at the time was such a waste of the finest Rock singer of them all especially when he was in his prime years during this period

I found rock music changing quite a bit going in to the 80's and I simply didn't like it. I can't say whether the IGB band was better than the other I just prefer that style of music. Ian is very versatile - as a singer and a songwriter. That's what I like about him. I like Cherkazoo and Dreamcatcher too which are pretty far removed from his rockstar image.
