In Rock: The Best Ever?
It's been over twenty years since I owned a copy of In Rock. As most board members know, Mark IIa Purple wasn't my favorite. I preferred the best songs off of the Mark II both live and in the studio over alot of Gillan era Purple. My favorite Purple albums were were Made In Japan and Live in Paris '75, however; S my favorite studio pick.
After buyinmg In Rock today, I was floored. I couldn't believe how I'd gone so long without picking this back up. The ;ast time I had this I was probably listening to Perfect Strangers and pretending half of it was anywhere near as good as In Rock.
To this day, I find Machine Head to be one of my least favorites. that album's best are far better on Made in Japan. But In Rock is the best Deep purple album.
I've been a fool.
Inn Gillan sounds like the best Rock singer that ever breathed. The rest of the band is fascinatingly creative. Blackmore's solo on Child in Time is obviously improvised for the most part, but it sounds increible. Into the Fire is Iron Man before there was such a Sabbath-y creature.
Blackmore looks like Bach on the cover.

Join the club...IR is and always will be my favorite studio rock album....try Fireball for a sklightly more melodic but very adventurous studio album. Machine Head is sort of between those two LPs and in many ways ultimately inferior to both....
Although I do feel those 3 albums are the holy trinity of rock records

Re: In Rock: The Best Ever?
I think In Rock is the best
because they play on it the way they played live at that time.
fireball is great and later records were ok, but they lacked this energy and those long solos and improvisation parts they you can hear on in rock.
For me In Rock is probably the best record in the history of hard rock music.

Q: In Rock: The Best Ever?
A: I'm certain that "In Rock" is probably "The Best Ever" something, in my non-humble opinion, but exactly what that something is, isn't clear to me yet.
I can provide a list of things that "In Rock" isn't "The Best Ever" of, in my non-humble opinion, though.

It is the best. If I'd only get to pick one album for a deserted island (if there was no electricity and a record player, I'd pick up any album with a nude lady on the cover...), this would be it.

In Rock, Made in Japan,Deep Purple Live in Paris '75, Zep "Presence", Rainbow Rising, Black Sabbath, Master of Reality, Sabotage, Sad Wings of Destiny, Sin after SIn, Stained Class..best of the '70's in my humble opinion.
I still don't think much of Fireball (save for The Mule and the title track), and I thought Machine Head was made obsolete by Made in Japan.
In Rock is better than Zep's first three albums, and comes close to the Zoso album (if not matching it... REALLY tough call there!).
But Black Sabbath's first three I still feel were the best of that time period....especially the first and third BS albums. And I still feel that Rainbow Rising flat out beat both Zoso AND In Rock.
Will the eggs fly now?

All here know I wouldn't pick a Purple album if it was a "single album" choice.
Damn close, though.

I didn't think I'd ever agree with you on anything but finally we agree on this point!
In Rock is and always has been my favourite album, not just my favourite DP album, but my favourite album of all time. Never been bettered, never will be.

Re: In Rock: The Best Ever?
I think to call it "Deep Purple InRock" as I believe that was the intention, to place theirselves in an inventive position, by calling theirselves out.
Best rock album there ever was, but I wonder how many listens, someone who finds theirself to be very informed on the subject of hard rock, but just has never heard it yet, for one reason or another, it would take, for them to agree with us.
I gave a copy to an ex employee of mine once, and he was from the east coast, Portland Maine ironnically, and he was 18 years old, and talking one day, about how Black Sabbath, was his favorite band, and I told him, well, you'd like it at my house then, is their anything you'd like to know about either the current state of them, or anything about their past, maybe I could fill in some blanks for you...
He then said "wow, you must be a big fan" I then told him, sort of, I'm actually a bigger Deep Purple fan.
He didn't know of them, other than SOTW, and couldn't even understand the 'ard rock, and 'eavy met-ul significance, being as SOTW is a more like a country song to him.
I started off by giving him BS Born Again, I take it he probably listened to it once, as he told me, "thats not my cup of tea, it sounds like them in the 80's, and I'm a fan of the 70's Sabbath" I then told him if he was interested in some education, I could show him where that vocal style originated, and who some of BS's comp were in the 70's, so I gave him InRock... the next day, I couldn't believe it, he must've listened to it several times, and read the lyrics, cause he was singing some of it that day, and told me he'd never heard anything like it... he also mentioned that the opening track on side two, sounded like it was stolen or borrowed from BS After Forever, but I had to tell him, it was the other way around.
But the kid was not very 'informed about the history of rock' as he'd never heard them before, and may not have ever had the opportunity, so I wonder if someone like, say... plenty older, and more educated on the subject, would admit to it blowing them away like that.
