Ali,

First off...good to see you here again. I hadn't been here in awhile, but hadn't seen you until recently either.

Second, I agree overall with your assesment of MIJ. I think extended solos can be overdone if you are a general fan of the band as a whole, and just looking for good, tight music that moves the evening forward.

However, since I play one of the instruments represented, I find I tend to go out of my way to look for examples of the subtle "tricks of the trade" within each solo. So for me maybe the quest and the tolerance is a bit different, than it is for other fans.

Brilliant live album, and Highwat Star, Smoke, CIT, SKOW and lazy are all fantastic...but I too could do without The Mule and Space Trucking.

But that was how things were back then...most bands I went to see featured long drum solos. The best 2 drum solos I remember were Cozy Powell with Rainbow, and the guy out of an American band I can't remember the name of now, but he played the drum solo with his hands, no sticks, damn, what was the band called? Not The Ozark Mountain Daredevils, was it? I know they did a song called Hot Rod, or something.

That would be Black Oak Arkansas and the "guy" in question would be none other than Tommy Aldridge. The drum solo was featured in their song, Up. Great song and one of the great drum solos. Like all of them, more fun to watch then just listen to though.....
