Jack Bruce & Robin Trower - Seven Moons

It's been a long time since I've been so enthusiastic about a new musical discovery, apart maybe from "The Origin of Captain Hammond" (see our friend B3Burner's post about it).

I'm not a good song describer. All I can say is that this blues rock album is a total must. It should already be playing on you Hi-Fi while you're reading those lines.

It's a miracle that liver cancer has eventually not taken Jack Bruce away. The former Cream bassist/vocalist, re-associated with Robin Trower, delivers a magic sound through 11 tracks which take us back to the best moods of the 70's. Even the cover sleeve looks retro.

A particular mention to three tracks: "Seven Moons", "Distant Places of the Heart" and the transmoving "The Last Door".

Here are some extracts.

I really liked the BLT album when it came out, but the follow-up "Truce" didn't do anything for me at all. Al, how does this compare to those earlier collaborations?

Sorry, I don't know the Truce album. When it comes to the BLT album, well, they are the same musicians but 27 years later. Moreover, considering Bruce's career, it would be difficult for me to like everything he's done at the same level.

Now that being said, I must admit that one thing I particularly enjoyed with Seven Moons is precisely the fact that it sounds very sober, very "naked" and that you could easily imagine it is actually the follow-up to the BLT album. Except that it sounds on the one hand less "funky" (I'm thinking of "Life on Earth") or less "rock'n'roll", and on the other hand more moody and introspective, than BLT.

Great record this one, Al.

Trowers guitarsound is classic Fender Strat blues sound, and what about Bruce' vocals? I'll keep this one in my iPod for a long time.

I've recently bought this and I'm slowly getting into it. Good so far.

I also bought Traffic's live album 'On the Road' and that's really impressive. Wonderfully cool jazz-rock, especially 'Shootout at the Fantasy Factory', which has a bit of a Santana sound to it.

Is that an old live album, or is it a fairly new one?

It's a live album from 1973.

Good to hear the album works, perhaps I'll pick it up after all. Why, I saw these guys at Notodden in Norway this summer, and somehow my great expectations didn't really come true. Those two heroes (or actually three, counting in drummer Gary Husband) seemed old and uninspired, and their music too sounded like they've played their material for long enough, sad to say. Not that it was bad, I mean how could it be, but they were not by far the highlight of the festival as I thought they would be.
Much younger acts like Joe Bonamassa and Trampled Under Foot outshined them with much more energy and enthusiasm, while another senior, Buddy Guy, totally outplayed Trower big time.

But of course Bruce and Trower left no doubt they're still in the game, so if the album sounds fresh it might very well be a wortwhile persue.
