In The Midst Of Beauty
This is the new cd by the Michael Schenker Group.
Schenker had his heydays when he was with UFO (Phenomenon, Force It, No Heavy Petting, Lights Out and obsession). After a brief stay with the Scorpions he formed the Michael Schenker Group.
On the first album he recruited Don Airey, Simon Philips, Gary Barden and Mo Foster. The cd had some great tracks like Lost Horizons, Cry For The Nations and Into The Arena.
Later on Cozy Powell joined (M.S.G.) and Graham Bonnet (Assault Attack).
After that it went all downhill. He returned to UFO (Walk On Water- great), left again, returned and left again and so on. The cd's he recorded (UFO, MSG,solo) were all very disappointing.
Now he has returned with ITMB.
The lineup is almost the same as his first one. With only Neil Murray on bass instead of Mo Foster.
Unlike another famous guitarist from the 70s he seems to have his act together again.
The production is not that great and I had to get used to Schenker's guitartone.
With opener City Lights the mood of the album is set. Short 3-4 minutes commercial sounding tracks with a lot of guitarwork and strong melodies. Gary Barden isn't the world greatest singer but he does a good job.
The rhythm section is close and Don colours the songs with his keyboards.
On a couple of songs you hear some DP influences (I want you and A Night To Remember).
The album is missing an epic track like Lost Horizons, and there are some fillers (Come Closer, The One) on it, but overal I think it is a great album in comparison to his last 10 years or so.
I have it my car for several days now and it's getting better and better. Normally I have a lot of new music in my car and if I don't like one cd it is replaced by another and seldom returns.
