Uli Jon Roth
Last night I went to see Uli Jon Roth in Kerkrade.
Two days earlier he was in Verviers, due to circumstances I had to skip yhat one.
The venue was just 5 minutes away from where I live, but I hadn’t been there before.
When we arrived the support-act, Punk Floyd, was already playing: for just about 10 people.
I had seen them before in Verviers in 2005 (?) also as support act for UJR. The band played a tight set of oldies like Sunshine Of Your Love, Shine On You Crazy Diamond, Roadhouse Blues. Their singer did impress me. His in between banter was so lame and the vocals were sub par. He tried to look and act like a Robert Plant, but didn’t have the personality nor the voice. Their cover of Crazy Horses wa a joke and their last song Mistreated didn’t go down well either.
Then UJR and band arrived, just 30-50 people were present, and I heard some one saying from the band ‘this is going to be fun’. Last I saw UJR in Verviers in 2005 and it was (almost) sold out.
UJR kicked off with Land Of The Dawn, The Magic Word, Letter Of The Law and Tanz In Die Dammerung. All from his latest album Under A Dark Sky.
UJR’s band consisted of a drummer (Michael Ehre), guitarist, bassplayer, second guitarist, keyboardplayer and a male (Mark Boals I thought) and female singer (Liz Vandall). He introduced his band, but I didn’t catch their names.
UJR played brillant and his band was really tight. Uli played a lot of twinleads with the other guitarist.
The crowd had difficulties following this part of the set. A lot of rhythm changes and different vocals as last time. Myself I thought it was great, UJR last album Under A Dark Sky I like a lot.
After that followed a keyboardsolo and everybody left the stage. When the solo was over the guy looked around, but no-one had returned. The bassplayer was hurried to the stage to play a solo and when he didn’t what to play anymore the crowd started the yell for Uli. I was afraid that he wouldn’t return like a certain other guitrist that leaves the stage when he's in a not too good mood.
Fortunately Uli returned (problem with his guitar). Then followed Sails Of Charon (with different arrangements), We’ll Burn The Sky and Pictured Life. Then Uli started asking the others what to play next and I shouted Fly To The Rainbow. Uli said no, but the female singer said that she liked one. And so they played it.
Each time when I hear him play that track it’s breathtaking. In the break of the song Uli starts singing and the music gets very spacy and in the end his guitar takes the song to a storming end. His guitar screams, growls, cries, don’t know how to describe it, but it’s great. Reminds me always of Blackmore in Space Trucking.
The other guitarist started playing a Hendrix riff, Uli signaled that it was ok and we got a Hendrix medly.
We also got Polar Nights (long intro and long middle section with Uli trading licks with the other guitarist), I’ve Got To Be Free and maybe some more. Don’t know for sure.
Then after more than 2 hours they left the stage. A few were yelling for more and I didn’t expect him to return. But they did.
They stormed on with Catch Your Train, a beautiful Life’s Like A River and another Hendrix tune (Angel?).
All songs were stretched and the band had really fun. After almost 2 and a half hours they left the stage.
After seeing and hearing Uli I wish that a certain other guitarplayer picked up his strat and started rocking again.
Great thanks to UJR and band to deliver such a great show for so few people.

Re: Uli Jon Roth
That sounds great!
Thanx for your review.
I looked at the clock but unfortunately it's too late now to catch Uli's show in Nordenham tonight.
I hope I may correct you. Uli in Verviers (also with Punk Floyd as support and I remember the singer well...) was in 2006.
