2. Black Cold Coffee
3. Wild One

After the last couple of below-par albums and the meltdown that was the last UK tour, Mogg and co have returned with a vengeance. Having been excited at the prospect of John Norum as the new guitarist (rumoured right up until the 11th hour) I was slightly disappointed with the announcement that Vinnie Moore would be in the new line-up. Vinnie first came to prominence in the flood of Yngwie-wannabes in the mid to late 80s. I bought and enjoyed his first couple of solo albums (Minds Eye and Time Machine) but lost interest in the whole "neo-classical" scene pretty quickly.
However he has earned his place in the band with a superb display - he really stamps his mark on UFO with some excellent riffs and soloing. Always fitting the song, he never strays too far into self-indulgent "widdling". The songwriting is of a uniformly high standard too - much improved from the patchy "Sharks". Mr Mogg is on particularly good form. Some of his singing sounds to my ears to be pitched lower than usual and it really suits him.

When Daylight Goes To Town is a great opener with a solid riff, Jason Bonham pitching in with some vocals on the chorus (seems like a good singer as well as a fine drummer). Black Cold Coffee opens with a funky riff that could almost be Glenn Hughes. Funk isn't a word I'd associate with UFO, but it works and works damn fine. Wild One is a classy little number and is working its way into my list of favourite UFO tracks. Another favourite right now is The Spark That Is Us, a mid-tempo number with a great rhythmic feel to it.
So far I've played the album 6 or 7 times and there is not a weak track on it. If you're a fan of classic-era UFO, or British Rock in general, then I can't recommend it highly enough.

I got this album a few weeks ago as well. Its a very good album IMHO. It starts off great but lags after the first 5/6 songs. The last six songs sound the same IMHO; nonetheless still a good record and light years better than Sharks.

That's strange - I would have said that the last few songs are the most varied!

The only song I've hear from this one is Wild One and it's really good. Maybe I should buy the whole album??

I'm listening to it right now,I picked it up yesterday but was too busy to throw it in,especially after playing the other stuff I bought.
I like it so far, overall I can say it's nice to finally hear something this good, since I haven't enjoyed a lick of their work since the fabulous Walk On Water.

This is the first UFO CD I've heard since Mechanix; never heard Walk on Water or Sharks so I don't really know how it stacks up against what they've done for the past twenty years. I think it's an OK CD, nothing special. There's some good songs and Phil Mogg's still sounds as good as I remember. But most of the CD sounds like blue collar barroom boogie rock. I miss the keyboards which always gave UFO that touch of gloss. IMO, everything from Phenonemon through Mechanix was pretty exceptional. It's kind of weird that Paul Raymond is given a full credit for keyboards, when you can hardly hear them. Then again, perhaps I'm being unfair as this is an entirely different lineup and it does sound pretty good cranked up in the car.

I like the new one but IMHO it can't compare to Walk On Water which is one of the best, if not the best, UFO albums ever. Try getting that one if you thought You Are Here was good... Covenant's also a classy disc if you ditch a couple of uninspired tracks. Avoid Sharks like the plague. emoticon
