Morse Can't Play Perfect Strangers
After listening to bootlegs off of this tour from South America, it had occured to me that Morse cannot play Perfect Strangers to save his life!!! The song calls for discreet guitar, powerful vocals, and that chugging middle and eerie end section. Morse has turned it into garbage with loud whammy-widdle work throughout the verses and loud distorted chords during the chugging riff sections. That song has been carried by the voice, bass and keyboards for 20 years and Morse has now decided to change it all for the worse yet again.

I have to agree, the whammy bar stuff is just silly. When I hear it I can't believe this is the same guy who did songs like Loosen My Strings or Clearly Quite Absurd.
On the other hand, his rendition of SOTW feels almost like a parody, too. All that 1980s metal stuff going on. You'd almost expect David Lee Roth or (post-Trash) Alice Cooper to start singing after the intro!

It´s not like you don´t have about 36 simular versions of the song already... You´re upset that there appears to be a 37th version that doesn´t sound like the others, or even the original studio recording.
Aren´t you two a bit conservative? There has been complaints that this version of the band just goes out and play a cover/cabaret/"same old-same old" versions of the old songs, and yet when some things change you´re upset.

Personally I find the chugging and whammy bar treatment a big improvement on the studio version. Ya can't please everybody. If he played it exactly as the LP some would say he was only a copycat. The saying "damned if you do, damned if you don't" springs to mind. Personally I like it and a big improvement on the studio version which to me was crying out for something else to be done with it live.
Cannot play it to save his life is as accurate as saying the north pole is somewhere in the middle of the Saharah Desert. Or is it the other way around. Well that's global warming for ya. 
Did I say I like it?

I also really like this version. I think were Morse sound the worst is when he tries to copy Blackmore note for note. I think he adapted this song perfectly, it suits his playing and for me is in the spirit of the song, so it fit great...

Hmmm, if there was a saying that springs to mind of the version then it has to be "you cannot buy taste"...
As for SM playing RB, I think he does play Lazy very much the way RB did it in the 1970s and does the track better than RB has done since 1973.

Oh my god! I absolutely LOVE Perfect Strangers with Steve Morse. He played it same since he saved Deep Purple and now after 14 years, you discovered America... Great Columbus, try to stay egg on top, you can got it today!
Now, seriously! I love that sound, he completely "reinvented" that song, bring new life for it, and yes, for me he plays that song 1000000 times better than Ritchie EVER played!

Sorry for the confusion, I didn't mean you but Morse. Please go ahead and like it but he should not have destroyed a DP classic like that. All the majesty of the track is gone. Actually, it's a real throwback.
It's how heavy metal kids played in the 1980s. I still look back at the period in horror! Fortunately guitar fans had people like SRV to listen to...
Sometime ago I heard a Finnish metal band cover Holy Diver. It was much like the original, except judging by the result, I can imagine the band sitting around in the studio going, "hey, let's make it cool by adding more distortion and whammy bar bits, man!!!"
