That's a fairly interesting 'twist' to take for this discussion, Dartagnan.
As far as I've been concerned for quite a few years now, both "Never Before" & "Space Truckin'" could've been left off "Machine Head" and "When a Blind Man Cries" & (pick one) either "Cry Free", "Freedom" or "Slow Train" been put on the album.
I've also maintained for quite a while that "Painted Horse" definitely should've been on the original "Who Do We Think We Are?".

The album is as good as the rest of the MK2's 1970s records.

Painted Horse should indeed been on the album.

It's a superb album, my 2nd favourite after In Rock, and Place In Line has some of Blackmore's best blues paying ever.

Well, I didn't say I didn't like the album, I said it is my least favourite of the mkII releases. I'd rather listen to IR, Fireball, MH and MIJ before that one. I've admitted before that I'm an out and out guitar nut, and for me, the guitar should be the main instrument in a hard rock band. That's not to say that I don't like the keyboards etc etc....of course I do. I just think RB is too mellow for my taste on WDWTWA, that's all. On many of the songs I'm sure they could've got a session guy in to play guitar - there's little of that 'have some of that' attitude going on. Jon Lord's great on it, though!

Blackmore on Beck: Jeff Beck's great to listen to. I don't put myself on Jeff Beck's level, but I can relate to him when he says he'd rather be working on his car collection than playing the guitar.

I quite like Never Before! Space Truckin'? -I'm glad it's the last track as I often switch off after Lazy...but, as a guitar nut, no one can tell me that RB's playing on MH isn't streets ahead of anything on WDWTWA. Place In Line has a nice, if somewhat derivative, blues guitar solo, but it's miles away from Blacker's great blues playing on Lazy! If I want that mellower tone, then I prefer the great, but very underrated, solo on Smoke off MH. And what can you say about Highway Star and Pictures? Wonderful stuff. Nope, for me, MH and WDWTWA are worlds apart - almost different bands. If WDWTWA was the direction that the band were taking before Gillan and Glover went, then I'm glad the band took the turn it did. I think the same about Stormbringer. I'm glad that RB left to form Rainbow, without question!

By the way - I don't like Painted Horse, either (guess you could say I'm blinkered!!). If I remember rightly, it has that same 'weedy' guitar sound, the one I always associate with RB when he's not very interested! I could be wrong, of course, as I listened to it at least twice over the past donkeys years, but I remember thinking that it was a bit boring?

I guess it's great that we can all have such differences of opinion!

I don't think a session player could do it. Sure, a session player could play the notes, but those solos have a lot of soul, and feeling, all Blackmore. I think when that red light went on, he delivered a good solo, no matter what the mood. I'm sure he and the whole band were at least trying to give their fans a great record; and they did!

Crank up 'Woman From Tokyo' and 'Rat Bat Blue' and that'll do for me!!!

Plus RB's sublime blues solo on 'Place in Line'...his best slow blues moment with Purple?

Woman From Tokyo is my least fave song on an otherwise brilliant album. WFT has a great opening, and a good riff, and almost a catchy refrain (!) but to me it ends a bit naffy. Just my opinion on that one.

Mary Long is a fantastic track, both musically and lyrically. Super Trouper and Smooth Dancer are great as well - the lyrics on Smooth Dancer (Gillans unnoticed 'hint' to Blackers) is interesting band history as well.

Rat Bat Blue and Place In Line reminds me a bit about the In Rock attitude, a little bit less non-compromising and a little bit more mature, but still close to IR.

Our Lady is my fave song on WDWTWA. An hypnotizing track, really something on it's own also in the DP context. Outstanding is the word here!

All in all an album so good it's a shame this period ended here. The reunion never brought the guys quite back up to this level.

Re: Who do we think we are?

I reckon its a really well crafted album, true it doesn't have the aggressivness of "In Rock" or the refinements of "Machine Head", but the song writing is much more mature. The remasters edition is alone worth getting for "1st Day Jam" - Lord and Paice are absolutely stellar on this, made even better, cos its Ritchies riff that starts it - on the bass! (Apparently, Roger Glover took a wrong turn when travelling to the rehersals, and got lost, so Ritchie filled in!) It proves that this trio were the absolute crux of Deep Purple.

Own it.

Just goes to show how opinions differ emoticon
Personally I don't like lazy on MH, it doesn't sound "live" enough for me, whereas on MIJ it is fantastic. PIL sounds to me like it could've been done in one take and has an immediacy and energy that really appeals to me.
