Perfect Strangers is one of Purple's best records, ever!! For me it was a natural follow up to WDWTWA. VERY strong songs! I have never grown tired of it, and I still listen to it regurarly.
I'm sure that they got paid very well for the reunion, but I don't think that they did it for the money. They tried to reunite one time earlier (1981 or 1982 I think?), but that attemt ended in a big argument between...well, you know!
I heard an interview with Ian Paice a couple of years before the reunion, and he said that the only thing that could make him leave Gary Moore's band was a Purple reunion. Besides, if they did it only for the money they would've stopped by the time Joe Lynn joined. At the time at least Blackmore would've made a lot more money by reuniting Rainbow with Dio or Turner.

Perfect Strangers is one of my favourite DP studio albums. So unfullfilled? Not at all.
Then for the money thing. Yeah, that's Ritchie in an honest moment. Of course they did it for the money. What did you think it was all about? This is called the music BUSINESS for a reason. Of course there were other reasons too. Ritchie wanted the Purple guys to join Rainbow in the late 70s, (but he only got Roger on the hook) so obviously there were something that he missed in Rainbow that he wanted. There were constant rumors and talk about a reunion so it was obvious that at some point it would happen.
I guess the others were eager to prove to the world that DP was still relevant in the 80s.
Reunions usually happens in an aura of nostalgia (when enough time has passed from the original event so you tend to see things in a romantic light, and the artist has run out of money. which usually happens about the same time...) I don't claim the Purple guys were starving at that point but I guess a couple of millions always helps...
that said, I think the end result was a really, really good Purple album so I don't care that it was done mainly just for the money. And I don't think you should either.

PS is the last great record DP made IMHO. For me its one of their best ever.

Interesting perspective. I've never viewed PS as a "natural follow-up" to WDWTWA. To me, it has always sounded like the natural follow-up to Bent Out Of Shape. More Hammond and better vocals, but musically it follows the direction Rainbow was heading in. I don't think the band ever captured the musical vibe of WDWTWA again, which is sad. It's my favorite DP album and had RB given a damn about the fans it could have been even more spectacular. Perfect Strangers is solid, but only contains flashes of the DP magic. That should not have been a surprise, because all the classic DP albums were moments caught in time. You can't recapture or recreate that. That said, I still listen to PS every now and then. It's a good rock album and when they get it right, it's spectacular.

Personally, I can barely listen to it anymore. There are some great songs on it (maybe 3 or 4) and most of the other are OK with only a couple that are out-right poor songs.
However I just find it impossible to enjoy because of the performances and particularly the production and mixing. I find the repetative drum-lines SO annoying. My minidisc player selected Nobody's Home the other day and then played Fools afterwards and I was thinking 'I can't even believe this is the same drummer!'. It just makes the album seem so tedious to me. Unpredictable, interesting drumming adds so much to music, particulary to bands like DP. To me the spirit of Paicey didn't return until Purpendicular and it's slipped away to some degree again.
The whole album just has a really clinical feel to it, it has no life, no spark. ALL the DP albums from Shades to CTTB have that off-the-wall spark to them, but none of the post-reunion albums do until Purpendicular.
Perfect Strangers is a superb song and I love many of the live versions, but to me the studio version is just dead.
If Purple had recorded that album in the 70s, with Martin Birch behind the desk, I have no doubt that it would have been awesome and the songs would have reached their maximum potential.

This sort of echos what I wrote in my "random thoughts" thread the other day. Listening to Paice on the 70's stuff, and then listen on the later stuff, and it's hard to believe it's the same drummer.

Well, it's a great record. And it's a shame that only one or two songs have survived. (I don't really count Wasted Sunsets on Gillan's latest tour).
The production is kind of awful though. It could be more powerful and in-your-face. Whatever that means.

How could anybody feel unfulfilled by "Under The Gun", maybe the best DP song written for the reunion?!? It blows me away everytime, a masterpiece of a production that song alone.

Have to say that i found PS a bit of a dissapointment!As someone who was too young to see DP first time around i had by this time seen all members of MK2 in thier offshoot bands ie Gillan Whitesnake and Rainbow and of course owned everything DP and said bands had released to this date and could not believe that my heros had reformed.Im not sure quite what i had expected from PS I suppose it was that the guys would follow on from WDWTWA and they most certainly did not.What I got was pretty much Rainbow with a better Keyboard player.RB is brilliant on the album(unfortunately he was not so brilliant once the touring got underway) JL is more prominent than he was with Whitesnake but not the JL of old(though he was fantastic once touring started and is probably the only one who aproached previous standards) ,Paicey was most certainly not the drummer of old and Gillan couldnt sing,and Rog was well Rog.As far as the tracks are concerned i like KAYBD,UTG,PS and Hungry Daze I have always hated NH and the rest are pretty uninspiring and well just ordinary.I have to say though when i got a hold of a later version of the album i did love Son Of Alerik.
