Abandoning "Abandon"
I decided to give my least liked Deep Purple album a new chance. I must say that Morse-era songs such as "Purpendicular Waltz", "Watching the Sky", or "She Was" are really getting on my nerves.
After relistening to the whole thing, I still have my doubts about the necessity of such an album in the Deep Purple repertory. However, some tracks deserves to be embarked on Noah's Ark (but in 3rd class), like "Almost Human", "Don't make me happy", "Fingers to the Bone", "'69".
As far as the reprise of "Bludsucker" goes, I really don't see why it needed to be included on that album... Yes of course! to make people buy it...

Re: Abandoning "Abandon"
I guess there's a lot that can be said about this album...A strange one indeed. Not dP's finest album, but still some great moments (as mentioned above and I might add Seventh Heaven and any fule Kno that).
The two things that irritate me about Abandon, are the production and the fact that it feels like it was lateraly half-produced, like Glover had the time to care for half of the songs and left the second part of the album with no attention (she was, whatsername, Jack Ruby, bludsucker just don't SOUND).There isn't really a song to save the ending (which might be why the put Bludsucker as a last resort).
The other is that Jon Lord left after this one, which almost makes it look like he knew, didn't care or was just bored with the whole thing (although his mind was probably already on the Concerto 99 thing, which is a great thing).
Somehow, I would have expected Lord's last effort with dP to be a great album, especially regarding the circumstances and good spirit in the band-same couldn't be said for Blackmore.
I still like Abandon, especially the first half, but it really gets out of breath on the second half.
A band on...and a half.

Bludsucker was included because they started to do it live again with Morse. People thought that it was a new song, and they decided to do a new studioversion of it. I don't think that they sold many albums just because of the inclusion of BS 'cause the people who buy Purple albums these days would buy it anyway.
Abandon is, IMO, a great album

Re: Abandoning "Abandon"
I like Abandon as well, to be honest i think its better than Purpendicular!!(I realise I may be the only one ) and for me the Abandon tour saw MK Morse at its peak since then things have become a little predictable and have a real going through the motions feel to them which may have something to do with JLs departure as the band lost more than a great keyboard player when he left.

I totally agree, ABANDON is very good, except that if the guitarist is NOT Steve Morse, the album would be greater than great, it would been a classic.

Frankly speaking, Abandon sounds to me like the B-sides compilation of Purpendicular.

Re: Abandoning "Abandon"
I never listen to it. I tried a few years back to give it another chance but I noticed that the only song I liked was Fingers... and it's not good enough to make me pull out the album and put it into the cd player.
Somehow the remake of Bloodsucker sums up the album: they were out of ideas and perhaps made the album to fulfill a recording contract.

Re: Abandoning "Abandon"
I must say I like it quite a lot in fact. To me tt has the power that the two follow up CDs lack. Maybe some new arrangements of some of the tracks could do better, yet there are some really classy songs on that one (Watching the Skies, 69, Evil Louie, even Any Fule - a very fresh and contemporary song, probably the most contemporary of all Morse era albums.
Don't be too harsh for Abandon. It's really good

Re: Abandoning "Abandon"
I like Abandon very much, I think it's classic Purple.
Purpendicular and Abandon are easily the best reunion era albums as a whole.

If we talk about the Abandon tour, that's something completely different, it was for me the best show I've ever seen (with the Albert Hall concerto 99). Yes, the band was at its peak on stage, Paice was back in business, grooving mad, hitting hard; Morse and Lord really were in complete osmosis and the playlist was awesome.
Never before since the reunion, never again, since Lord left...
