The Bananas appeal
I was just listening to Bananas a couple of hours ago, and I remembered how much how loved it when it came out...The feeling remains the same. It is such a strong album. The songs are really great, even the so-called fillers like Razzle dazzle have a good vibe. The production is very good-I know there were some distortion problems with some releases.
It is (IMHO) the best and the tightest album released by dP since Perfect Strangers. The structures of the songs, the solos (truely inspired!!!), the "2 fast/mid tempo-1 slow" pattern of songs in the playlist provides a real good rhythm to the album (weither it's intentional or not).
It might not be my favorite (Purpendicular still holds a special place in my heart), but it's definitly an album I will enjoy listening to over the years.
A classic to me.
--- Bananas are good and good for ya!
Love obviously.

Re: The Bananas appeal
I also think Bananas is a great album, one of the best Morse-era albums. Different, but equal to Purpendicular. I think it's more of a "back-to-basics" album, more "rock" if you will, where Purpendicular had a more experimental touch. Both are favorites of mine. And I think it's a shame they don't use House of Pain as a concert opener, I think it would be perfect for that.

Re: The Bananas appeal
I think "House of Pain" is an extremely bland, and often lifeless rocker more than a little self-consciously designed. You can hear the band's professional skill, but it also sounds as inspired as a rock.
There's some strong stuff on the album though. I was pleasantly surprised by a few of the songs, especially "Silver Tongue". It's a much better album than "Rapture", imho, which was a total rush job.

Re: The Bananas appeal
Yes, Bananas is a great album. I also remember that feeling the first time I listened to it - realising straight away that it was something special.
I disagre with DevilGotMyWoman's comments about ROTD, though. For mine, just when you thought DP couldn't get any better, they released ROTD. It's a masterpiece IMHO. It is my favourite DP album - BAR NONE!!!!

The entire album is bland and lifeless as are all of the Morse era releases.

Re: The Bananas appeal
I think Bananas is a really strong album. Aside from Burn, it's probably the DP album I listen to most at the moment.
IMO it is the best post-reunion album, I don't know if some copies have sound issues, but my version sounds great. I think it has the strongest production since the Martin Birch albums. Although for some reason Bradford's production on ROTD is nowhere near as good.
I found it interesting that I could play Bananas to people my age when it came out and lots of them liked it and were surprised to find out that it was DP.

Re: The Bananas appeal
Bananas is my favourite of the Morse era albums. Certainlly the only one which I listen to from beginning to end without skipping tracks. Very solid, despite there not being anything as outstanding as Sometimes I Feel Like Screaming.
My favourites from the album are Sun Goes Down, Silver Tounge, Walk On (which I didn't like at first) and I Got Your Number.

I agree on Rapture. Try as I might, this album just never appealed to me. There are a few good sonds, but overall, I find it the worst of the Morse era albums.

Re: The Bananas appeal
For me, Bananas is hard to judge. Picture of Innocence, Bananas, I Got Your Number and Silver Tounge are all great songs. The rest is clearly average or very much below average, by Deep Purple standards. Never a word is a joke, and Contact Lost is just not Deep Purple.
I attended one show on the Bananas Tour, and I was neither disappointed nor aroused afterwards. Lukewarm is a word that comes to mind.
But I agree, one song from this album should be added to the setlist.
