I think it's regarded at about the level that it should be and merits.

Would be cool to hear BA live, though.

It's on Nobody's Perfect, but unfortunately not as an opener...

Re: HOBL underrated?

I still remember the disappointment when I first heard the album back in 1986. I was embarassed by it: mates at school who were into heavier bands slagged the album off and I couldn't but defend it, with little success. The album just sounded wrong, and in places, it really still does. The songs sounded much more powerful live, but fittingly, NOT on Nobody's Perfect (another disappointment, which softened the blow S&M was to give later though).

One of my favourite boot DVDs is the Helsinki show from this tour. The band is really on fire, and the HOBL tracks sound beefy and rocking.

The sleeve is the worst DP have had before or since. You don't want to know what is behind that door! Sadly, that thought carries an implication to the music as well... Nah, just kidding.

Spanish Archer, Strangeways and Mitzie Dupree are great tracks. Bad Attitude and Unwritten Law are also very good. Mad Dog kicks off with a nice riff, but then turns to average at best. Just like the rest of the album.

The best thing about this album are the lyrics. Gillan does a fine job vocally as well, but the instrumentation just sounds wrong, not the choices of notes, but the overall sound. They should have worked with Birch again, but that is easy to say now.

I don't know if the album is underrated! In any case, I have to give it a spin some day, haven't done so in a long time.

I think perhaps one of it's biggest problems was that it lacked really memorable songs, even if PS only had two it was still two more than THOBL.

Not to say that it's an awful album, it's better than PS in many ways, it's more consistant it has a lot of good songs, but none that could be classed as classics, I don't think. It also suffers from the awful production and tame performances (compared to their 70s records) that tarnished PS.

I think HOBL is overrated. I think it was absolute crap. There are 3 songs I like, these being Bad Attitude, Unwritten Law, and Strangeways. The rest is 80s commercial synth crap and is a hell of a lot more like Rainbow than Perfect Strangers. I think The Battle Rages On is underrated. The keyboard solos in Solitaire and the slick production still rock in my eyes.

Still bored by songs like "Time to Kill", "Lick it up", "Talk about Love" or "Ramshackle Man"... To me, HoBL has not so many fillers...

Solitaire was a good one except the vocals. All in all, my problem with TBRo is the vocal lines and the lyrics: "Anyaaaa... Anyaaa Spirit of freedom": Gosh: what kind of lyrics is it? such a cheap chorus and keyboard intro.

On the other hand, I like "The battle rages on" (song), "One Man's Meat" (but there again, surely not for its lyrics), "Nasty Piece of Work".

"Anya" was saved thanks to its live version and to Ritchie

HOBL definetly has some great tracks. Spanish Archer is great with some outstanding impro from Blackmore. Gillan sings fantastic as well. Bad Attitude is killer. So is Strangeways and The Unwritten Law..

To me THOBL is the last really exiting record DP have made. Purpendicular has its moments, but just lacks the drama.. Sounds far better than HOBL though. And yes, HOBL sounds far to 80ish and they should have remixed it by now emoticon

Only my opinion, but I still play both TBRO and S&M if not frequently then at least regularly. I can't remember the last time I played HOBL all the way through. Every time it hits the CD player I realize it really is as bad as I always thought it was.

I've never known what the fuss regarding Spanish Archer is. I've tried about 10 times but have never liked it. Weird. I just got bored of THOBL very quickly, I can't listen to it 5 times a day like I can to Perfect Strangers, In Rock, TBRO, and WDWTWA.
