Mitsi Dupree is one of the best tracks on the album. Very good blues tune. Would have been a better fit for a Morse era album.

Some posts on page two reflect my sentiments perfectly;HOBL was a true stinker and is frequently overrated by many posters here.It was BAD in '86 and it still sounds bad in 2007,but thats just my opinion. emoticon CHEERS

True, it was a stinker then and even worse now. At least it had a contemporary production but the 80s stuff hasn't aged well. The sterile drums, the cheesy synths etc. It's just NOT what DP is about. It really wouldn't be that bad if only there were some memorable songs, but there isn't.
There are about 5 listenable songs here, but while not groundbreaking or extraordinary in any way it's the other tracks that are incredibly lame that makes the album the stinker it is. Purple should have called it a day here. It's too obvious they had nothing new to say. They had run out of ideas. It should have been a farewell EP. That way they still would have had some credibility and it would have saved us embarrassments like S&M and TBRO.

Re: HOBL underrated?

I like the album way better than PS. The songs are tighter; the riffs more solid; the sound is way more like DP than the generic sounding PS, which could have passed for any number of hard rock/heavy metal albums from various artists at the time.

The songs rock. 'Mad Dog' is a hot track, as is 'DOA'. Both of those tunes have more Blackmore/Lord interaction than the entire PS album. 'Spanish Archer' is pretty cool and 'Strangeways' is kind of unusual, but has some decent Blackmore soloing. 'Anya' is a remake of that tune, basically.

The opening track is a slam-dunk and 'HLW' is a pretty fun track, as is 'COTW'.

My only problems with the album were Gillan's voice and 'Mitzi Dupree'. A basically crummy song showcasing Gillan's mostly shot voice. He sounded like he was singing over sandpaper. In a way, though, his voice being shot actually was a plus for the album. He didn't try to sing like MKIIa Gillan because he couldn't, which was a problem on PS. It was on this album that he started to change his singing style, albeit because he had no choice. He was much improved on TBRO.

In all, HOBL out-rocked PS. Is was way faster, more up-tempo than PS, which I thought was just too mid-tempo for the most part. It harkened back to the Purple of old with more solid riffs and non-generic sound. You knew that it was Purple from the opening riff. PS could have been made by any generic hard rock band of the era. I see HOBL as a progression from MKIIa, where I don't see PS fitting in anywhere except as the reunion album.

As I have stated before, had they gotten HOBL out in a reasonable amount of time, late '85 or early '86 at the latest, I think that they would have continued their success from PS and we would have seen a longer-lasting and more stable MKIIb. Maybe no JLT or Morse marks, at least not as they happened. Maybe replacements coming in as members retired, as Airey came in for Lord.

Either way, that is my take on the subject. emoticon

But they didn't, and thank goodness!

I think Blackmore might have been out of ideas, but if you are an open minded Purple fan, the Morse era albums, or at least three of the Morse era albums are full of great "ideas" and have plenty to say. Heck even Gillan had plenty to say on TBRO, but thats just my opinion.

Cheers!

I gave the album a spin yesterday and it sounded much better than the last time. That's the opposite to many other experiences with old albums and bands. In the latter case, you remember something being really good and when you listen to it now, you are disappointed. I'm glad HOBL sounds better now. The performances are very good. It was corking to hear a Lord synth backing on one of the tracks, and realising just how trademark stuff it is - one's just accustomed to hear it done on the Hammond!

Still, a remix could do the album much good.
