How good is Burn (the album)

Got the Burn remaster and have been playing it incessantly. Oh Yeah!!

I love WDWTWA, but Burn is better. I knew that of course, but what I didn't know... see, in the past few days I've come to think that maybe I prefer Burn to Fireball. Maybe. If that's in fact the case, then Burn would be my third favorite Purple album.

It's a little weird for me, giving that high of a rank to a non Mark 2 album... and to a non- gillan album as well...but I can't help it if I like what I like, now can I?

I just wanted to see what the rest of you thought of the Burn album. Is there anyone for whom Burn is the best album? Does anyone prefer Mark 3 to Mark 2? Does anyone dislike Burn?

IMO Burn is easily beat by the groundbreaking In Rock and Machine Head. Does anyone disagree? And if so, please elaborate.

Where, exactly, does the BURN album stand among Purple albums?

I love Burn, I love Mistreated...

but I do not like the rest of the album at all really (Might Just Take Your Life is okay, actually).

Seems to lack energy of the MkII predecessors. If we were to take out Burn and Mistreated it would probably be my least favourite Purple album.

As it is I rate below all MkII releases except HOBL and probably behind Purpendicular and Bananas too.

Burn & Mistreated are brilliant though.

Burn is an excellent song and has just as much energy as any of the live songs at MIJ.

I really like "You Fool No One", but have a hard time getting into "A-200". I just don't dig on synths too much. I think it was a low spot in Jon Lord's career.

Burn is my favourite Deep Purple album. It,s the studio album that shows Ian Paice is really the governor, Blackmore plays like he is having a good time, Coverdale sings his balls off.

Because i only had Burn on L P before the Remastered came out i am well pleased with the sound it is a lot crisper, the solo,s are clearer. Not sure about the remixes but roll on Stormbringer and Come Taste the Band as my albums are becoming worn

Burn is a brilliant album (particularly in comparison with the mediocre WDWTWA) But it stands up pretty well in the Purple catalogue judged on its own and I think it's one of the important Purple albums.
(along with In Rock, Machine Head, Perfect Strangers and Purpendicular)

unfortunately mkIII changed direction after this album and couldn't quite live up to the Purple standard anymore.

The title track is just fabulous and Mistreated is very good, too, but IMHO this song worked live much better than this studio version.
The rest of the album has some very good moments (mostly during Might just take your life and You fool no one), but all in all it doesn't reach the high level of the MK II albums IMHO...

I love Burn. I think it is possibly one of the band's best albums. Blackmore is fantasticly good and churns out his ultimate studio performance. Paice is all over the place and really sounds like he is enjoying himself. Coverdale and Hughes really give the vocals their all and Lord sounds earth shatteringly good. Love the album, love the mark 3 and rate it as one of the best.

Yup, that's my thoughts too. If they had kept the flow from the Title song, that energy and intensity, MK3 may have been more appealing to me. But as it stands, Burn is only middle of the pack in my rankings. If there is ever a US version of the remaster, I will buy it, but I don't see myself changing my opinion on it.

Okay, here comes my statement of the week:

No incarnation of DP did that on ANY album except Speed King on In Rock.

End of my statement.emoticon
