Well i am only half way through the book, and so far the most startling thing to me
is that Ritchie "upset" Eric Clapton much earlier than i had thought. Obviously i
do not want to spoil things for people that will get this book, so i will leave it like that.

I'm on page 67 and am dying to read further!
This book is interesting and very well written. Apart from RB fans (many themes and phenomena known to us from his days in DP and Rainbow are to be found in his early career, inc. the notorius pranks as well as how he was at the receiving end of band leaders' merciless behavior, early encounters with paranormal, etc.), anyone interested in the 1960s British rock scene should read the Sixties part. Fascinating stuff!
I'll try to find time to write a full review of the book when I have finished it.

Haven;t finished it yet but is excellent, really gives a feel for RB as he progressed through the years from a shy young lad, cycling around west london w his guitar on his back.
i myself do the same thing these days around the same area, often w a 'RB Signature' strat in my gig bag!

have read it all now. quite superb! you get a full overview of all his career not just MH, MIJ, Cal jam, water @ b'ham etc., and it is no brown nose job. quite the opposite, RB often coming across as extremely self centred, cynical and child ish.
nothing new then! we love him all the same!

Thanks Peter´, I'll take that and add the following problems for my review:
- there should have been an index of names instead of the discography
- I found myself wondering the grounds for some things about the disposition (of contents), mainly for the BN years
- (this might explain that last question) the BN era feels rushed compared to other parts of the book, and especially the early years, the last mentioned being the best part of the book
- the exclusion of the HOTMK voacls anecdote from the SIUA sessions seems odd
- a more detailed list of sources would have been apprpriate
However, a very good book indeed! Congratulations to the author!

Just finished it myself and I have to say it's excellent. The detail regarding his 60's career is brilliant and fills in a lot of gaps for those who were curious as to his development up to Purple's formation but who, like myself only had bits and pieces of information about his early career.
I highly recommend this book to even the casual Blackers fan.

I read it recently and Ritchie was depicted as the moody man in black, impossible to work with, egotistical and liable to sack anyone who accidentally dropped a bead of sweat on stage in front of him.
Worst still, he also seems to have been a compulsive womaniser, an occult obsessive, a lousy father and, as far as fellow musicians go, a rather childish prankster at best and an out and out bully at worst. **** in lampshades, throwing javellins through windows, chucking bassists out of cars, setting fire to cards and putting them under doors?
Since meeting Candi he appears to have undergone a personality transplant overnight (first it was the hair). Ian Anderson was reported to have said that Candi has brought out the cuddly pussycat in him. The evidence is all there.. (apparently)
Now we're expected to believe that he is a tree hugging, friendly, amiable, chatty and generous to those around him and is even nice to journalists. Money is of no importance to their current BN project (says Candi). It's all about love and conviction of what is good music true to their hearts.
Yeah right...
The guy's not just a genius guitarist. He's a psycho of Norman Bates proportions or else he's revolutionised his PR strategy.
I don't think Candi has much to do with it (and we all know that pussy cats are devious self centred bastards that scratch the furniture, demand constant attention and food and can't be trained).
