For me it was the first time seeing Def Leppard, 10th time for Whitesnake.

I only managed to last 3 songs into Black Stone Cherry's set before heading for the bar. They're quite good in a de-tuned kind of way but the sound in the hall was awful. I had to go for the sake of my ears! Given a better mix on subsequent dates on the tour, they should do quite well.

The sound was better for the start of Whitesnake's set, improving gradually as the set progressed. The highpoints for me were DC's banter and the slower songs (Ain't Gonna Cry No More Today was excellent). DC's voice sounded great on the Ain't Gonna Cry, Ain't No Love and Is This Love. The vocals for the rest of the set ranged from good to less than impressive, sorry to say. His showmanship is second to none, however, and the band went down well.

Def Leppard were simply brilliant. The set-list was made for arena package tours, there were no drum / guitar solos (an un-necessary luxury when you're on a tour like this) and they had the crowd in the palm of their hands.

So for me (a Whitesnake fan), Def Leppard definitely won the day. Even if you took away Leppard's impressive stage set and lighting, they were killer.

In hindsight (even though I'm a big fan of the new album), Whitesnake played too many new songs. OK, Leppard played three from their new album too, but let's face it they sound like their old stuff anyway emoticon. I think they should drop the drum/guitar solos and two GTBB numbers (Can You Hear The Wind Blow and A Fool In Love), put Ready An' Willing, Don't Break My Heart Again and Lovehunter back in and then they would be more competition for the Leps.

All of the above IMO of course.

Thanks for that. As a long time WS fan I think Cov has got this wrong (from what I've read and heard) which is a shame.

OK- cards on the table. This was my 14th WS concert since 1981, and I have to say that vocally it was DC's worst performance by quite some margin. I am a huge fan of the man and have been prepared to overlook his diminishing vocal range on recent tours, as I have still enjoyed the gigs. However, despite the fact that he still has great stage presence and works the audience brilliantly, some of the vocals at the gig last night were truly awful. Even on the lower verses of "Is This Love", he was off pitch more often than not. In his higher range, he screeched his way through the gig and it was occasionally painful to watch. I saw DC deliver stunning live performances of depth and emotion in the early 80's and am just so sad that his voice is now so shot. This is despite the fact that there was no gig the night before and the 2 most recent performances have been shortened sets at festivals- therefore there was no excuse for his voice to be knackered. I was right in front of the platform where DC stood for much of the gig and in many of the choruses (and verses for that matter), he "mouthed" the words but didn't actually sing- this was left entirely to the backing vocalists. I realise this has been commonplace in recent years but the fact was that he actually did less singing at last nights gig than ever before.

However, in a perverse way, I still kind of enjoyed the show- as I love the music and the band played great. However, I just don't know how many more times I can pay good money to see my hero struggle like this live. On a positive note, Ain't Gonna Cry No More (acoustically played) sounded great and this has to be the way forward for DC. If you listen to Starkers, to the acoustic perfomances promoting the last live album, and to the snippets of the New York acoustic show promoting the new album- DC sounds great. That was what upset me more than anything else- if you strip these songs back to their bare bones and allow him to sing properly (and in the lower register), he CAN still sound great.

arn't opinions great!

there i was reading the set list for whitesnake, having seen them a few times previously, before reading the other posts and i thought oh great, hes really promoting the new album.
i hope he keeps the same list until wembley at least, as it makes a refreshing change.

i for one think can you hear the wind blow along with best years are the 2 best songs on the new album.

but agree with such a short space of time, drop the solos!

Definitely, but for a package tour he should be churning out mainly hits (like Leppard). Never thought I'd hear myself say that, but it's true.

Totally agree with this, and all your other comments.

Re: Glasgow - 17/06/08

Despite my previous comments about DC's vocals, I should probably add that I quite enjoyed hearing the new material- particularly as it was performed by the same musicians who recorded the tracks (which is unusual for WS and which meant they actually sounded as they should). WS have been basically touring as a "Greatest Hits" band since 2003 so I thought the set needed new material. I was pleased that "A Fool In Love" replaced "Crying In The Rain" as I've heard that live one too many times now. Shame they didn't play "All I Want All I Need" as they played it at the soundcheck (intrumentally only) and it sounded great. I think the only problem with so much new material is that WS played a slightly curtailed set in any case (80 minutes approx) so it might not have suited many less devoted WS fans to include stuff they may have been unfamiliar with??

So, how are they gonna make a DVD out of this tour then?
