Re: Red Rocks show cancelled after 4 songs!!
Of course he could go on with the current WS line-up screeching for a couple more tours, but that wouldn't be very creative/exciting.

Re: Red Rocks show cancelled after 4 songs!!
I can't see David spending the rest of his career (if there is one) going acoustic and crooning ballads. It's just not in him and quite frankly I think the fans would get bored of it fairly quickly. At most it would be a one off tour.
Remember...as hammy as it is David is an entertainer. Which is why I suspect that David will pack it in rather than do something hes not 100% comfortable with

Re: Red Rocks show cancelled after 4 songs!!
He could be an entertainer in the crooning format too, telling stories of how the songs came about etc. But it's more "naked" and would require more of him than being onstage with the WS band, so who knows if he can do it.
But you're right the approach only works for one or 2 tours.

Re: Red Rocks show cancelled after 4 songs!!
If DC could combine his lower register with singing rock and bluesyish songs then I can see him going forward. If he can't....then maybe he does another farewell tour and does a bunch of acoustic songs
Davids voice is in such disrepair I think the four song set at Red Rocks I witnessed maybe the last we see of David Coverdale as a performance artist.

Re: Red Rocks show cancelled after 4 songs!!
jmorton, my point is that you're not in the majority within the US audience. The point for David is to reach with his latest work, that is the GTBB album, new audiences, not to hold on only to the fans like you, who have been supporting him since, say, the 80s. It doesn't make sense if he wants to achieve a real success, and I know that's exactly what he wants. The new album is, I think, solid enough, to bring new fans, but since he fails to deliever the goods properly (poorly advertised package tours, poor state of his voice, and not enough new numbers in the setlist). That's why he's stil an old hero who sang Still of the Night and Is This Love 20 years ago. And this means he's only a third-league act, not a major rock artist - which is what he tries to achieve.

Re: Red Rocks show cancelled after 4 songs!!
It's too late in the game for DC to achieve "real" success in the US. With hair metal being the in thing in 87, it's now hip hop and R&B. And the casual rock fan is more likely to remember Tawny than DC himself, which is a bit of a dilemma. He doesn't have the track record of being a true artist (although we certainly know he has). Plus the hard rock tradition seems weaker over there than in Europe too, creating less of an interest for a band like WS.
In short, having minor success with GTTB in the States isn't going to change people's perception of DC. And it isn't going to promote him from clubs to theaters. Going on package nostalgia tours is the only way to go there, since he's in the 1987 category having not had any real visibility in the US as an artist since then.
He did play a healthy number of songs from GTTB, btw.

Umm, I agree about the state of his voice but not about him retiring. Given the last statement he made, he will be back. Now, I hope he changes direction and to be honest I do not feel an acoustic approach would be a poor earner for him. He needs to reinvent himself (as he started to do at the end of the 90's) and stick to his guns. He needs to do something like Johnny Cash did when he met Rick Rubin. He has the right kind of voice for this, in fact it could open a whole new market for him, but he needs to work at it and rebuild his career away from the screaming hair metal.
Will he do it? Doubtful, I'm sure the hair metal will win out which is a shame.

Re: Red Rocks show cancelled after 4 songs!!
I just read this on DC's bulletin board. It made me laugh. I thought it was malicious at first, but it's not.
"HELLO DAVID, I know you have a frog in your throat, why don't you let him do the singing for the time being. Perhaps you could pay him a small wage for his trouble!!"
