1. The Rainbow version is good but for me too clean and technical. Whitesnake gave it a certain meandering majesty without relying on the solo section as much as when RB performed it. Coverdale delivered with huge emotion but has never had the same technical delivery as Dio (imo) but it's that kind of thing that draws me to the music... it feels slightly dangerous as if it could all go off the rails at any moment.

2. BTW, BM is a fan of Blackmores. Whether he was back in 1980 is another thing: the bands were at loggerheads for a while and it was probably banter to say otherwise.

1. That's truly interesting Wojak. I feel almost completely the opposite: I think Rainbow played the 'majesty' element to the maximum, and that WS had all that stuff (talk box, twin guitar parts...) in the solo section meant they built the impact on that part of the track.

The same applies to what you said about the 'on the edge' factor: With Rainbow even the band didn't know what RB was to do next (play a solo, come up with a riff which others then took on, will there be a guitar-vocals duel at the end...), whereas the WS version seemed more orchestrated with the features mentioned above.

But that we seem to completely disagree on the matter is what these discussion forum are all about!

2. Thanks, I didn't know that. Do you know if he liked RB before his stint with WS or only after?

Well, he told me a story about Cozy Powell asking him round to listen to a new album he'd just got. He put it on the turntable and asked him to name the band. Bernie told me the music and vocals were stunning, unlike anything he had heard at that point.

The album and track was Burn.

I've also heard Bernie praise the current Blackmore project, so I think he is a Blackmore fan who got sucked into the whole KRAP campaign back in 1980 (anyone remember the Keep Rainbow Away Please badges worn by DC?)

Cheers! I only heard about the KRAP campaign later on, but still, a memorable thing for sure!
