Your first times

An old but [I thought] interesting thread that had dropped out of the archives. I managed to find page one of the four pages via google:

 Your first times

First time heard Deep Purple
My elder sister's copy of the Fireball/Demon's Eye single. The keyboards in Fireball reminded me of Dr Who "The Sea Devils" for some reason, so I liked it!

First time saw Deep Purple
Knebworth 1985 - mud, mud and more mud. Sitting (or standing) target* for bottles filled of all sorts of disgusting fluids. 5 miles from the stage for the support bands, 50 miles from the stage for Purple due to urgent call of nature at a most inopportune momemt.
The best concert I've ever been to (© - DMeadows)

First time heard Rainbow
Since You Been Gone in the UK charts. Like it.
All Night Long in the UK charts. Don't like it.
Watch Rainbow on BBC Donington footage. I LIKE IT!
Buy Ritchie Blackmore's Rainbow - smitten emoticon

First time seen Rainbow
Edinburgh Playhouse - Bent Out Of Shape tour (both nights).
First night - hmmm, maybe Ritchie's not the player he used to be.
Second night - awesome!!!

First time heard Whitesnake
Fool For Your Loving - UK charts. Hmmm, this sounds a bit like Rainbow? (yes, I was uneducated in those days emoticon)

First time seen Whitesnake
Glasgow Apollo - Come An' Get It tour. Worst possible seat - at the very back of the gods. Awesome.

First time heard Deep Purple
I got first introduced to DP in 1998. I don't remember which happened first, and it doesn't matter, but the things I heard first were live. First of all, my father played Made in Europe (which I have now in vinyl) to me, and also one of my friends (who isn't a big DP fan) had Nobody's Perfect and I heard it there. I thought Burn and Perfect Strangers were pure magic. I still do. Then I bought my first DP cd which was Deepest Purple. And here I still am.

First time seen Deep Purple
I'll see them in November two times. I would have seen them already if they hadn't cancelled the Scandinavian dates in summer. emoticon

First time heard Rainbow
When I bought Rising some 4 years ago. I didn't like it at first (emoticon) and still I think that Rising is overrated. The first album blew me away though.

First time heard Whitesnake
When I listened to my father's Live in the Heart of the City vinyl 1½ years ago.

First Time heard Deep Purple

Must have been around 1997-1999: Has to be the riff of Black Night in an TV add and then the entire song on VH-1(1999)

First Time seen Deep Purple

Regensburg, June 1999 (Abandon Tour second leg, brilliant gig!)

First Time heard Rainbow

In 2000: Man On The Silver Mountain (But I guess I´ve only checked it out and the first I heard entirely was Kill The King) on Greatest Hits (1997)

First Time heard Blackmore´s Night

In 2001, I think: Either Possum Goes To Prague or Fools Gold on a home made sampler that was send to me.

First Time seen Blackmore´s Night

Rothenburg, July 2003

First Time heard Whitesnake

In 2001: Quite like with Rainbow. Still Of The Night (but the first song I´ve heard entirely must have been Slide It In) from Greatest Hits

First time seen Whitesnake

Munich, May 2003

First Time Heard Deep Purple:
Sitting in my driveway listening to my little Panasonic radio in about 1974 and Smoke on the water came on. Thought it was the coolest thing, my neighbor made me a cassette with a bunch of live music and put Highway star on it from MIJ. got me hooked.
First Time I saw Deep Purple:
In 1984/85 Perfect Strangers was a very hot comeback for them. Still loved the Purpendicular tour best. 3000 seat hall, blew me away with their energy and different songs

First time heard DP

Hush, in 1968 at Carbondale, IL while attending Southern Illinois U. Heard it on an AM out of St. Louis, but can't remember the call letters. Same station used to carry the Cardinals baseball games with Harry Carey as announcer. He was drunk then too. I guess I was too, since I don't remember the station.

First time DP live

1969 in St. Louis, then again in 1972 in Detroit. Haven't seen them since, but I will certainly go to the local concert in 2004.

First time heard Rainbow

Man on the Silver Mountain, whenever that came out.

Never have seen Rainbow

Whitesnake - Don't care (almost kind of a hair/chick band)

First Time Heard Deep Purple

I'd heard Black Night and Smoke On The Water here and there before but the first time I really heard Purple was Perfect Strangers on a recorded tape found at the bottom of a drawer 2 or 3 years ago.

First Time Saw Deep Purple

Hammersmith Odeon/Apollo, September 6th 2002 (Friday night) - mind blowing experience.

First Time Heard Rainbow
I'd heard Since You've Been Gone before but had no idea who it was and the first time I really heard Rainbow was seeing the Long Live Rock'n'Roll video on VH1 Classic.

Never seen them and never will.

First Time Heard Whitesnake

Here I Go Again '87 on VH1 Classic, I had them typecast as a crappy hair band until I saw the much better Saints 'n Sinners version a week or two later.

Never seen them and don't want to either

First Time Heard Blackmore's Night
I saw a clip of Shadow Of The Moon on the Channel 4 programme "Top 10 Guitar Heroes" where Ritchie was criminally placed at #9 emoticon . I bought the album a few weeks later and I was hooked.

First Time Saw Blackmore's Night
Will be on November 10th at Reading. emoticon

 Re: Your first times

Thought this was to do with sex emoticon but obviosuly not.

Interesting reading a lot of the early posts here how recently some members of the forum have "found" DP.

1st time for Purple was Strange Kinda Woman the Guitar/Vocal interplay on MIJ was amazing! Still is.

1st show was at the NEC not long after the reunion. A thrill.

Rainbow was the first album when RB still had an edge to his playing and saw them plenty of times on tour.

Whitesnake I bought the "Snakebite" ep and loved it although friends said DC would never amount to anything outside Purple ! Saw them tons of times and was once able to meet them all backstage even the delightful Mrs Lord with her hubby. Whatever happened to him? emoticon

The first time I (knowingly) heard Deep Purple - summer of 1984, a friend loaned me "Deepest Purple" on cassette after I mentioned that some guys I met while away at Poly had been into "heavy metal" and it wasn't all as bad as I had thought.

First time I saw Deep Purple - Knebworth, June 22nd 1985. The best concert I have ever been to (© D.Meadows)

Re: Your first times

First time I heard Purple - It was on CKLW-AM in early '72. They were playing the edited versions (extremely shortened guitar solo)of SOTW...studio & live. They were on different sides of the same 45.

First time I saw Purple - Cobo Arena, Detroit February '76. I can't really tell you exactly how they were...it was my first concert ever (I was 15) and it was ****ing DEEP PURPLE, so it was gonna be great no matter what!

First time I heard Rainbow - I bought their first album the day it came out.

First time I saw Rainbow - Royal Oak Music Theater, R.O. Michigan fall '78.

First time I heard Whitesnake - Fool For Your Lovin' single, every AOR station in America, '80...I think.

First time I saw Whitesnake - Monsters Of Rock tour, Nurnburg West Germany '83. They headlined a concert that included Ozzy (who didn't show), Thin Lizzy, Blue Oyster Cult, Motorhead, Meat Loaf, Twisted Sister and Saxon. It was fantastic. I hung on the fence right in front of David Coverdale for their whole set. I didn't feel the pain of the crush 'til the next day, back in the barracks in Wurzburg. Our First Seargent made us run 10 miles for PT in my honor.

Re: Your first times

I don't consciously remember the first time I heard any Deep Purple performance. However, the earliest I remember any performance of Deep Purple material was a group of friends of mine playing an instrumental version of Smoke on the Water at a talent show. One guy on drums, one on bass, one on guitar playing Jon Lord's parts, and another on guitar playing Ritchie and Gillan's parts.

Re: Your first times

First time I heard Deep Purple? It was around '72, I was 14, and kept hearing this cool song on the radio, which was of course Smoke on the Water (MIJ version).

First time seeing them, unfortunately, was 1998, on the Dream Theater/ELP/DP tour for Abandon, in Mansfield, MA (and I have the boot, which is cool). It was an awesome show, and sadly, the only time I saw them headline.

First time I heard Rainbow was after Rising came out, a friend gave it to me for my birthday. Funny thing is, I didn't like it at the time. I was still so bummed about Blackmore being out of Purple, I couldn't give a fair listen to it. Only much later (years!), I pulled out the LP, and listened again, and realized what I missed! Sadly, never saw them live.
