[PROJECT] Deep Purple Audio Quiz (DPAQ)
Ok, this needs some explanation...
Everybody likes quizzes, right? Ok, sometimes they might be a bit boring, but how about if they would be based on short sound clips of actual Deep Purple songs through the years? The quiz would play very short 10-second sound samples and ask some questions about them, like what's the name of the song or who wrote it or when was it released etc. The better you'd answer, more points you'd get. Now that would be fun!
DPAQ is a project for that. It will be a normal Windows application, which plays short (5-10 seconds) MP3 samples directly over the Internet and the player must answer the questions. After he or she has finished the quiz, the final score can be submitted into online highscore list, so all the players worldwide can compete against themselves.
It's a unique, never-seen-before fan project. A fun little game featuring very short music samples of hundreds (200-300) of DEEP PURPLE songs over the decades. In total, there will be over 3,000 different questions about the music.
But I would need some help here from people who are interested in participating to this kind of project - otherwise it won't happen. Help is needed from people:
- who are interested in song/question selection: which albums to include, which live versions to include, what kind of questions to add to the quiz
- who are interested in testing the quiz (to see if it works and is there some mistakes/glitches)
- who have large collections of DP material in MP3 format and could help in collecting these short (5-10 sec) MP3 clips (with a converting software)
- who can provide reliable server space (the quiz needs some 15 Mb of free web space)
If you feel you can contribute in one or more areas, post in this topic. Also if you have any questions, post them here.
The quiz would be only for the DP-fans and for the community to enjoy, and it would have no other use (e.g. commercial of any kind). The forum members could play it freely whenever they want and try to achieve a new highscore. In one word: fun.

Re: [PROJECT] Deep Purple MP3 Quiz
Thanks for making this sticky...
It would be great to hear comments on the project and e.g. ideas what kind of question types to include in the quiz.
At least there will be:
- what's the name of this song?
- on which album was it first released?
- who wrote it?
There could be some 5-7 question types, general questions, from which one at the time would be presented to the player. So first the quiz selects a song to play, then a question to ask about that song.
Any other ideas for questions that could be asked from every single DP song?
Comments/suggestions/questions? Don't be shy to post them...

Re: [PROJECT] Deep Purple MP3 Quiz
A few ideas that may help to keep it going...
Which mk
Which guitarist/bass player/keys player/singer.
Not a lot of point in which drummer i suppose
For the more knowledgeable, which record label, who sang/made the original.
Where it was recorded, when, and if you are stuck on
a question for a particular track...who put the kettle on.

Where it was recorded, when
Nice ideas, thanks! I'm sure we can use many of those.
I think there could be "basic questions" and more "trivia questions" in the quiz, like this:
Basic questions
- which song is playing
- which album was it on
- when was it released
- which mk
- which guitarist/bassist/singer (keyboardist would be too easy perhaps )
Trivia questions
- where recorded
- who produced it
- how long is the track (in minutes)
- writers of the song
- which piece of lyric fit to the song
More ideas and comments are appreciated...

You can comment both at this forum or at the blog. The blog will have some more detailed info on the project.

Re: [PROJECT] Deep Purple Audio Quiz (DPAQ)
I'm planning to include short sound clips of some 230-250 DP songs into the first version of the quiz, the following albums:
# Shades Of Deep Purple
# The Book Of Taliesyn
# Deep Purple
# In Rock
# Fireball
# Machine Head
# Who Do We Think We Are
# Burn
# Stormbringer
# Come Taste The Band
# Perfect Strangers
# The House Of The Blue Light
# Slaves & Masters
# The Battle Rages On
# Purpendicular
# Abandon
# Bananas
# Rapture Of The Deep
# Made In Japan
# Nobody's Perfect
# Total Abandon - Live In Australia '99
# Live At The Olympia '96
Although I don't have the Mk I albums, so I'd need a little help from some kind person, who could contribute in producing the very short sound samples out of MP3 files (it's an easy job, takes about 30 minutes). Contact me via PM/email, and I'll tell more about it. Everybody who contributes to the project, will get his/her name into the quiz credits, if wants.
Anyway, what do you guys think of the live material included? Should there be some additional albums or is there some which you think is unnecessary?
Let's get this thread a bit more active! Currently it seems not that many people are interested to see this thing finished..?
P.S. a preview picture was added to the first post in this thread.

Re: [PROJECT] Deep Purple Audio Quiz (DPAQ)
Well Mikko it looks like a great project!
Consider your questions a bit more carefully: for example, "when was it released". I suggest you specify it by asking the original UK release date (for example the Mk1 albums, or WDWTWA getting a release before MIJ in the States).
The lyric "trivia" question is interesting. You could ask, for example, which one of these five phrases is from this song (and all of them would be from a DP or family song).
Trivia or 'bonus' questions could be individually selected for each song. In many cases you might need to ask the question in style of "what have DP said about...", "what has RB claimed of his solo in Hold On" etc.
As for the technical side, I really can't help you...

Thanks Rezi for your comments..!
The release date question is currently only on a year-level, so the actual date won't probably be asked. But yes, I'll specify it so that it's always the first release of the current album (featuring the song that is playing) that is being asked.
The lyric questions works just like you commented. The phrases are very short, and thus it can be quite difficult in some cases to find the correct one.
Also your last idea about song-specific trivia questions is really good. Perhaps those can be added with help of some DP-experts. I'm planning this to be a long-term community project, which will expand time after time with some new stuff & ideas.

Re: [PROJECT] Deep Purple Audio Quiz (DPAQ)
Here's a preview screenshot of the quiz, where you can see an example of the most basic question (title of the song):
As you can see, there are four possible answer alternatives presented. All the player must do is to click the one which he or she thinks is the correct one. Fast correct answers give more points than slower answers, and from a false choice some minus points are given.
There will probably be different "game modes", like questions only about "Morse Era" or "Mk II" or "the 70's stuff", which I thought might be good here because DP have so many differently "focused" groups of fans. Also for the newer fans, there is some easier game mode that asks only basic questions about relatively well-known songs. However, the main mode has all the songs and all the questions, and the scores in this mode are listed in a global online highscore board. For example, we'll get to know who's the "best" DP-expert here at the forum.
If someone is interested in testing the quiz (means: playing it, which is very easy, just pressing the buttons and answering to the questions) before its first version will be released, contact me via PM/blog/email and I'll tell you more about it. Only thing you need is a PC with Windows and an Internet connection. A tester can test as much/little as he or she wants, and will get his/her name/nickname into the credits of the quiz.

Re: [PROJECT] Deep Purple Audio Quiz (DPAQ)
A small update to this...
The first version of the game will have:
- sound clips of 236 Deep Purple tracks
- a total of 3,304 different questions about the songs
(of which you need to complete 30 questions in one game)
- 5 different game modes or question sets: "all (1968-2005)", "the 70's", "Mark II", "the Morse era" and "piece of cake"
I'm trying to get a first real test version ready during this weekend.
The first public version will hopefully be released in the beginning of October.
