In Rock After A Long Break
To put it bluntly, the Hard Rock Classic of classics.
I had been really immersed in the music of Mozart, Haydn, Richard Wagner, and Anton Bruckner, so I never seemed to have much time for my old Rock favorites. Yesterday I felt compelled to throw on In Rock (I actually announced it to my girl "Mount Purple-more"!). From Speed King (loved the piano version) to Hard Lovin' Man, I was once again struck by the Monument that is In Rock. Though there is certainly some Zeppelin influence in the song structures, the actual players have so much individual personality showing through that this album is unquestionably a whole 'nother (and in my humble opinion) superior beast to Zep.
Let's all give a tip of our individual, Purple-felt hats to the Icon that this mighty album is!

by the way, it has always been my reading that the exact title of this album is Deep Purple in Rock (like we say "Shades of Deep Purple"). However, after having seen so many times the album called "In Rock", I'm not quite sure anymore whether this latter is the exact title or just an abbreviation of it.
This is certainly the most exciting discussion of the year...

(loving this post!)
It's either that or Rainbow Rising for me. I've always imagined that the creators of In Rock (including Birch, etc.) must have intimated how massive the album would be. Especially in terms of Eternal Rock Monolith status.
They must have been thinking something like "this is so much better than anything hard rock is doing...in fact, it's like we're inventing an entire style."
Supa-heavy, but full of individual personalities whom make up an earth shattering whole. What else could have motivated that domineering, incredibly inspiring album cover? Find another album cover that so memorably, gloriously enshrines the Fathers of Hard Rock. Machine Head? uh, NO (great album as it is)!

Re: In Rock After A Long Break
I think it is interesting to see that Deep Purple never attempted to remake another album like "In Rock". They never used the same sound.
In Rock is pure like crystal. It's raw, sharp, without any compromise...

Yeah, IR has everything to it: pure raw energy, simple killer riffs, sophisticated instrumentation, screaming (both vocals and Hammond), gentle vocals, noise, beauty, and like you said, despite the collective power all the musicians stick out as individual musicians. The way the album starts is like the band kick down the door of your house, no, they 'bulldoze' through the wall, and then caress you with the gentle intro of CIT. And then a full whack on your head again. Etc.
While the compositions are simple, the dynamics are stunning. Just think of the difference between the main riffs of Hard Loving Man and FOTR. They're basically just one note (and the key) apart, yet the drive is completely different - this of course becomes even more apparent as the tracks start in proper. Yet, the heavy minor gallop of HLM and the sheer joy of the lifting major chords of FOTR... Man.
Sometimes I still struggle to believe what an absolute masterpiece the album is.
