When is "A funny thing happened on the way to the Forum" supposed to be set? I can't get a straight answer anywhere, and it was sooo long ago since I saw it.

Is there any Emperor mentioned in the script?

At first I wanted to object your inclusion of Life Of Brian, but it seems to me you define "Rome" as in "Roman Empire" here which also would include places that were just occupied by the romans(like Jerusalem).

Well, yes. I wasn't very consistent with that. I added it, I suppose, because it has Roman centurions in it.

Re: Films set in ancient Rome

I was hoping to be able to add titles covering the period following the so-called Claudian emperors, say, AD 75-200.

With the exception of the destruction of Pompeii, that period doesn't seem to have attracted much attention from movie makers.

The character list in IMDB mentions Julius Caesar, Cleopatra, Brutus, Agrippa, so it definitely qualifies for the list.

Thanks.

Thanks, this is interesting! A few suggestions:

The Gladiatress was vaguely set in Caesar's period.

Mel Brooks' History of the World Pt.1 has the Roman empire episode set in the period of Caesar.

If the Jerusalem part of things is included, the Christ films by Scorsese and Gibson should be on the list.

What about the Asterix films?

Re: Films set in ancient Rome

Thanks! There's an updated list here:
Films in Ancient Rome

I added the one Asterix movie I know about. I assume there is only one that ain't a cartoon.

The Shakespearean plays (Julius Caesar plus Antonius & Cleopatra) and various retellings of the gospel stories are clearly the most popular themes -- perhaps not so suprisingly.

For me personally, those aren't necessarily a priority.

I still need to spend some time at the IMDB and ALLMOVIE sites.

Nope, there are two. But the one you list, Asterix et Obelix - Mission Cleopatre is the good one. Absolutely hilarious, at least in the French version. Alain Chabat (Cesar) and Jamel Debouzze (Numerobis) are incredibly funny.

The first non-cartoon Asterix movie was Astérix et Obélix contre César (1999), with Roberto Begnini. This one was really bad, IMO.
