Madeleine McCann - Missing British girl in Portugal
Madeleine McCann is a 4-year old British girl who has been missing (feared abducted) from Praia Da Luz, Portugal since 3rd May 2007.
Madeleine is the niece of a friend of friends of mine. Here are links to two posters - one in English, one in Spanish.

Spanish - http://weissheim.pwp.blueyonder.co.uk/Madeleine/Madeleine%20-%20Espanol.pdf
BBC News article - http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk/6650711.stm
Please send these to any friends you have, especially people you know who live in Europe. Lets all help get Madeleine back.
Thanks.

Re: Madeleine McCann - Missing British girl in Portugal
Got your e-mail.
All I can say, there are happy endings. I certainly wish the best for this little girl.
Children deserve a chance to grow up.
I hope for a happy ending here.

Re: Madeleine McCann - Missing British girl in Portugal
Any (hopefully good) news on this John?
My family's hopes & prayers for the return of this child to her family have been with the McCanns since we read of this here...
--- " Those who can - do. Those who can't do - teach. Those who can't do or teach - administrate."
- Anon.

Re: Madeleine McCann - Missing British girl in Portugal
I share all the above sentiments for the child and the McCanns and hope this little girl is found safe and well. But on the latest developments....
The media attention on this case - which is now three months or more - is bordering on obscene. It was fine at first to highly publicise it because optimism to find Maddy safe and well and quickly was at a peak and most people who holiday in the Algarve could identify with the type of family involved. Therefore, the publicity given at first was appropriate and fitting to the problem. But after so long with no obvious leads that have progressed the case to a conclusion?
There are thousands of kids that go missing every year that hardly ever get a mention in the press or TV. So each time these other parents pick up a newspaper or switch on the news they are not only reminded of their own angonising plight, which is probably no less painful than that of the McCann's, they are also reminded that their own missing child is somehow not as important as to warrant the degree of publicity Madelaine's case is getting - adding to their pain still further. After all this time, I would expect this degree of publicity to continue apace if a royal child had been kidnapped, not a couple of holidaymakers who left their child unattended whilst they went out to dinner.
The McCanns are now coming across as selfish which is unfortunate considering their actions are largely responsible for why they are in this position in the first place. A point we need to remind ourselves of. So this is the very last impression they should be giving if they want to maintain public cooperation and sympathy.
The Portugese police have done all they can to accommodate this family and the town their child went missing is now suffering economically because of loss of tourist revenues. Why should local businesses suffer still further? Yet the McCanns still insist on staying there, even though the locals want them to go away. Clearly they don't give a jot that some local business owners might go under financially, which would obviously affect the lives of their own families and children. Staying is not going to bring their child back - only the police can do this.
If the McCanns had any dignity and thought for other families who've suffered a similar ordeal, they would respect local opinion and leave as they can do no good there. Instead they should come back to the UK, get their lives back to normal as best they can, and let the police continue the investigation. After all, it's no more than other parents faced with similar dilemmas have had to do.

Re: Madeleine McCann - Missing British girl in Portugal
Wow, you obviously don't have children!
Neither do I, but if I did i wouldn't just sit back and do nothing and I certainly wouldn't be thinking about businesses and their finances. How can you even suggest they should?
The more media attention they can get the better, otherwise people just forget and stop keeping an eye out for the child.

No, I don't have children, but I don't think the McCanns can do anymore than they've already done. Others feel the same way, and presumably some of those who share my sentiments do have children of their own. I don't think leaving Portugal is at all the same as doing nothing. Everyone feels sorry for this couple, as they should, but life does go on and it's unfair that something like this should impact on others' lives needlesslessly when no good seems to be coming from it.
It's a police investigation, and only they can unearth the truth of what has happened to Madelaine and can bring her back safely, if she is still alive.
No one should give up hope or give up looking and I'm sure this won't happen.
