My thoughts on "Thinking & Society"
It seems like in our fast paced world today, thinking is something to be done fast, for the purposes of executing tasks, not for the sake of its own intellectual reward.
If you think deep and narrow and are truly moved by a subject-- to the point that you wish to spend more than just a few mere minutes analyzing it-- you are accused of being nerdy, obsessive, or a candidate for some new drug approved by the FDA.
Yet, if you think wide and shallow on a variety of subjects-- never spending more than the "socially acceptable" amount of time on any one of them-- you are considered a "renaissance man of the world", with an "impressive '****tail party knowledge' " on a myriad of topics of interest to others.
I liken it to a report from NPR vs. a report from "Entertainment Tonight".
How the former is chastised while the latter is embraced, I will never understand.

Re: My thoughts on "Thinking & Society"
Simply put, I think it comes down to too many people's choice of nearly always choosing the path of least resistance. That, along with most people seeming to have the attention spans of fleas...I feel that a lot of the problems - here in America, anyway - are brought about due to the tendency of having the societal 'pendulum' swinging too far to either extreme at certain intervals. What I mean by that is, it seems the generally accepted societal values/mores/standards/whatever will be either extreme conservatism or extreme liberalism...it would be refreshing to see some common sense every now & then.

Yes to the extent that the way people use their minds, will ultimately affect their politics-- I agree.

Re: My thoughts on "Thinking & Society"
I'd gladly weigh in on the subject, but in the time I began reading this thread, I've also begun (and subsequently moved on from) a game of minesweeper, an article on the CNN home page and the clipping of my toe nails.

So much for thinking, then.
