Dio Rainbow Live vs. Dio Sabbath Live vs. Dio the Band Live.

Which would you prefer? Consider each option when the band was in it's prime

I prefer Dio Sabbath. I want to see the voice sing most of the time and I really don't want to see some Keith Emerson wannabe to do long keyboard wank fests.

I also prefer more shorter songs vs. 7 or 8 songs that turn into wank fests too.

Dio the band doesn't have star guitarist to complement the voice.

Dio the band.

I saw Heaven and Hell this year. They were good, but not great. With Dio's band he cherry-picks the best of Dio/Rainbow/Sabbath. You also get to see him in smaller, more intimate venues, and with a much lower ticket price. And, dare I say it, the Goldy/Sarzo line-up were equally as good live as H&H.

Dio Rainbow.

I agree that they (=RB) streched too many songs of the sets live, but in every other way Rainbow was something else at that point in time. Unlike the other two bands in the poll.

Dio Sabbath was excellent, but Dio the band only sounded good to me when I was about twelwe. After that, it just sounded a generic heavy rock band with outdated lyrics and a fantastic singer.

I also agree with DSR's point of guitarists in Dio the band: all of them were - and are - merely of run of the mill category (although Dio said he thought Campbell combined the best of Blackmore - soloing - and Iommi - rhythm).

Well we know what Dio thinks of Campbell now a days.emoticon

If Campbell is really that great, then why is he playing as a 2nd fiddle guitarist in a pop metal band? Maybe he is there just to collect a paycheck. To be fair, he probably collects a lot bigger paycheck in Def Leppard (who always draw well in North America) than he would Dio.

It was a close race between Dio/Rainbow Live and Dio/Black Sabbath Live...I wasn't all that impressed with last year's "Heaven & Hell" live stuff, so I used the early '80s Dio/Black Sabbath Live as my criterion...Dio/Rainbow Live won out & garnered my vote.
As was commented on, sometimes Rainbow circa 1976-78 stretched out tracks too much in concert, but the overall musical impression made on me then has stood up to the test of time a bit better than Sabbath's of the early '80s did...it may not be fair to include the following in my decision making process, but the other members of each band played a big part in reaching my final decision - the Blackmore/Powell axis when combined with Dio's vocals just made a more long lasting & more favorable impression than the Iommi/Butler/Appice trio did.
Like Ian Gillan with Deep Purple, for me, Ronnie Dio was, is and always will be the 'voice' of Rainbow.

Rainbow by a solid margin over Black Sabbath, and a wide margin over Dio. Black Sabbath with Ronnie was and is a fantastic band, I am to this day totally in love with HH, MR, and LE.

But Rainbow for me was like the next step up from Deep Purple (which at the time was the greatest Rock/Metal band ever). Not as far as players (Tony Carey and David Stone definitely weren't Jon Lord, Cozy Powell was great but no Paice, and Bob Daisely and Jimmy Bain were great...songwriters). But for songwriting, progressiveness, groundbreaking operatic vocals and Wagnerian storylines, and most of the best guitar playing of Blackmore's career, Rainbow 1975-1980 was it.

Even the version with Graham put out a great album (Down To Earth is at least as good as RBR, in my humble opinion), and at least a dozen brilliant live performances during that era...Don Airey, now THERE'S a great player!.

Dio the band has had some spectacularly great moments; even post-Vivian Campbell, each album would have at least one excellent song (well, Angry Machines is debatable). But Ronnie's band just never equalled a full length album the stature of Rainbow Rising, Long Live Rock and Roll, or Live in Germany. As great as Holy Diver most definitely was, I can't compare it to those albums. Heaven and Hell and Mob Rules DO match the latter two, if not Rising.

I'd even go as far as to say that both Black Sabbath Dehumanizer was just as good as any of the post-Dio albums.

So, Rainbow by a healthy edge over the other two. For me, Rainbow, Black Sabbath, and Deep Purple are the best ever bands in Rock/Metal music, so I guess that says alot about my choices in general.

Agree, but the poll is about live performance, not albums. I'd never put Dio the band above Rainbow or Sabbath/H&H as far as albums are concerned, but live is a different story. I didn't see Dio with Rainbow or Sabbath in the 80s/90s, but have seen him with Heaven and Hell and many times with his own band, and the last few Dio gigs top the H&H show by a considerable margin for the reasons I outlined in my earlier post.

Well, live I have to go with Rainbow by a large margin. Ritchie and and young, peaking Ronnie together...the best. After that Black Sabbath, Tony played fantastically with Ronnie. Live Dio was at times really good. But Viv just ain't Tony or Ritchie now, is he? And yes, I mean in terms of quality.
