Now what people here think of Chuck Burgi?
He was OK on BOOS but rather weak and faceless live. A big dissapointment after Cozy and Bob. Not to mention his awful (even by 1983 standarts) haircut in Can't let you go video. Played better on 1995 Rainbow video but still the guy was lacking something (personality?). Never heard him with Brand X so maybe I'm missing his better performances...

I think he's a better technical drummer than people might initially think. Maybe he's had a personality bypass, but that's not uncommon for drummers, they are usually strange characters anyway!

Rondinelli and Cozy were better but Burgi did a decent job IMHO both on BOOS and the tour and also on most of the SIUA gigs as well (John Micelli also did a handful towards the end).

Hehe, now you´re talking!
Some of my very best friends are drummers in bands, yeah they gotta be weird!

He's good, but often overplayed live. I prefer him to Rondinelli though.
John O'Reilly and John Micelli played much better than the two mentioned above. Tasty drummers, both of them.

I guess it depends on if you judge him on his merits he is better than anyone gives him credit for being here.
Try his studio work with Hall & Oats
and his live work with Billy Joel and Blue Oyster Cult, then see what ya think.

Re: Now what people here think of Chuck Burgi?
IMHO Rainbow drummers have all had a distinct slant to their styles (unusually for a hard rock band)
Powell and Rondinelli were 'nailers'; hard hitting down-the-line drummers, whereas Burgi had that jazzy inflection Ritchie seemed to like. Cozy had the edge with his focus creatively in the studio; something he's never given much credit for but vitally important for Ritchie at the time.
Micelli wasnt there long enough to judge, though I thought O Reilly's work on SIUA was very stiff.

Re: Now what people here think of Chuck Burgi?
Overall you have to figure that Ritchie wasn't in the habit of playing with inferior musicians( until of course he met Candice!, but she not really a musician, so it doesn't count!). Ritchie made his name with Ian Paice behind the kit and he was without doubt a most superb drummer. Ritchie is bound to have looked to find someone of that sort of calibre, just as he looked for a Jon Lord( and never foudn him) for keyboards. I read somewhere that Ritchie reckoned he played entirely off the drummer, so he was very fussy about their time keeping, especially when he paid for rehersal space by the hour!. As ever that could be the usual BS but there must be at least some sense in it. I therefore think you can assume that any drummer that has played with Ritchie must have demonstrated an impressive turn of skill to land the job at all.

Re: Now what people here think of Chuck Burgi?
I think Burgi is doing very well on Bent Out Of Shape. He's perfectly steady without sounding like a drum machine, he handles soft stuff like Can't Let You Go, up beat like Street of Dreams and heavy rockin stuff like Drinking With The Devil all equaly well me thinks. Undoubtly a very talented guy!
But he ain't got that personal touch, he's neither magical or reckognizable like Paicey and Cozy.
He was a worthy member of Rainbow, but not one of those turning Rainbow into more than Blackmore's personal project.
--- In heaven, everything is fine...

Re: Now what people here think of Chuck Burgi?
I saw Chuck twice with Rainbow in 1983,I hate to say it but he had the hardest time keeping things going at both shows, the first night Ritchie played a phased solo through Chucks solo spot,it sounded okay, but the next night he didn't do it,and Chuck was pretty lousey on his own.
Sad story, but true to my vivid memory of it,but if it's any enlightening,I enjoyed watching him much more that JLT any day.
