Beaconsfield movie

Bana tipped for Beaconsfield movie

The Sunday Telegraph
May 17, 2009 12:00am

THE story of Tasmania's Beaconsfield mine rescue will be made into a telemovie, three years after it happened. Miners Brant Webb and Todd Russell recently signed a deal with production company Southern Star Endemol to produce a movie about the real-life drama in April, 2006.

It is understood Hollywood star Eric Bana has expressed interest to play Webb. Shane Jacobson, of Kenny fame, is tipped to play Russell.

Webb and Russell will have roles as technical advisers.

A location has not yet been decided and a script has not been written, but sources say it is hoped the movie will be on screen within two years.

The story will focus on the mine collapse, which resulted in the death of Webb and Russell's workmate Larry Knight, the rescue of Webb and Russell and the aftermath - including the relentless media attention.

One source said Tracy Grimshaw, Eddie McGuire and Bill Shorten would also be sought out for the movie.

All three were central figures during the dramatic two weeks Webb and Russell were trapped in the mine.

NEWS.com.au, 23 Sep 2008 After being rescued, Webb and Russell became global celebrities and appeared on talk shows in the US.

The huge media interest in the story landed the pair a reported $2.6 million deal with Channel 9 for a two-hour special.

They have continued corporate speaking, according to their manager, Sean Anderson, whose high-profile clients include Jennifer Hawkins.

After being invited to every red-carpet event for a time, Webb and Russell are living quiet lives.

Russell is selling mine explosives, while Webb is living his Australian dream as a recreational fisherman.

I remember when this happened. It was all over the news at the time. Pretty awful thing.

He's at his best when he plays Australian, but I'd prefer to see him do something a bit lighter.
