Munich (2005)

Don't know if this is the right section so feel free to move this post, I am new here and just guessing.

Eric has signed on to a movie by Steven Spielberg based on the 1972 Olympic Hostage crisis that ended in the death of Israeli athletes.

According to the International Movie Data Base it starts filming this month.

IMDB: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0408306/combined

Bulletin board discussion: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0408306/board/threads/

Info on the real incident

As a person studying political social radical beliefs I'm looking forward to this movie.

Ahhh silly me - I meant to say "No, supposedly it will be shooting in Poland" ... sorry about that, silly silly me. Someone at the ERIC-BANA-RAMA website said that Steven Spielberg would film in Wroclaw, Poland - I wonder if there will be other locations?

Yeah, the IMDB only shows Wroclaw, Poland also. I'm thinking it may all be done there unless there are some scenes where government leader type characters make decisions. Those scenes might be filmed elsewhere.

Okay, did some more research on this. It will not be about the Olympics but the Wrath of God missions by the Israeli Mossad afterward. This was when the Mossad basically took justice into their own hands to kill the Arab terrorists.
http://spielbergfilms.com/mossadhome.html

John Williams, who signed on to write the score, has said this will be based on the book "Vengeance: The True Story of an Israeli Counter-Terrorist Team"
http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/0553250582/002-4121055-4916059?vi=glance

My first dates were wrong, due to the problems with The Terminal. So the shooting has been pushed back to August.

I really don't think now is a good time for anyone to be making this movie, IMHO. But since someone is, I sure don't fault Eric for grabbing this prime role.

I don't know. I don't think there is ever a wrong time to make a movie. You can't just stop creating and commenting on things because someone might get offended or wait around until somehow it isn't a "sensitive subject".

In one form or another this has been a sensitive subject for over 30 years--and very likely it will go on being a sensitive subject for another 30 or 300, just as other things with other groups and other ethnicities. How many centuries between the Serbians and Croatians? How long for the Turks and Armenians?

Certainly the Israeli/Palestinian situation hasn't really changed much either way, some of the names are different, some are the same--ultimately it's still too many innocent dead on both sides and it really doesn't matter who "started it" anymore.

I remember with comedy, Terry Gilliam once saying nothing ought to be off-limits. It stands or falls as it is. I agreed with that and I agree with it in terms of drama as well. Very little should be off-limits in drama so long as it attempts to treat the subject matter with proper gravity. If they waited for the "right time" make this project, it might well be Spielberg's great-great-great-great-great granddaughter who ends up making it.

In any case it sounds interesting, probably the first Spielberg movie I've thought sounded interesting in years. It just depends on whether or not he can avoid obviously audience manipulation and hammer-handed moralizing he often shucks into his films. If he doesn't simplify all the complexity out of the story it could be his best film in years and a really great opportunity for Eric.

You have a good point, and I do know how this has been a sensitive subject. Even asking for books on this in the past has resulted in bad looks from some librarians!

To me, there is a time when it becomes history and needs to be discussed.

I was simply thinking of "Arab terrorists" from the point of Mossad when Arabs are getting a rough time being associated with terrorists in general due to 9/11.

NEWS

Secrecy Surrounding Eric's New Movie
July 9, 2004

An article in today's Wall Street Journal details the extreme secrecy currently surrounding Spielberg's latest film, which stars Eric.

The article indicates the film will be called Vengeance (one of the alternate titles Bana-nas had heard thrown around), and will focus on the hunt for the Palestinians by Mossad agents (rather than solely on the kidnapping and events at the Games themselves).

Extreme secrecy surrounds the project - it's a controversial topic (the hunt for and killing of the Palestinian kidnappers without any kind of trial), and Spielberg is apparently keen to keep things close to the vest for security reasons as well. Marvin Levy, Spielberg's publicist, denied that security on the set of the movie was the primary reason why the studio was refusing to release any information about it. Security, Levy said, "is just another factor, but not the primary reason" for secrecy.

See the Vengeance page for more!
