Funds cuts ill advised
18oct04
As another national campaign is launched to increase the awarenessof mental illness in Australian society, a Townsville group concerned with support for those experiencing a mental illness or living with someone with mental illness has been forced to slash its services.
The Mental Illness Fellowship of North Queensland has started culling its list of services following a decrease in funding from Queensland Health.
Their predicament comes to light on the very day advertisements starring Australian actor Eric Bana start airing in what will be the country's biggest campaign to raise awareness of mental illness.
As this campaign notes, one in five Australians experiences some form of mental illness yet health authorities, it seems, continue to back away from their responsibility to fund programs which can help a large number of people deal with what is, tragically, something still largely surrounded by stigma and stereotypes.
The Five in Five campaign refers to the fact that while one in five Australians will experience mental illness during their lifetime, five in five can help. It is a message worth broadcasting but how much support will it foster if programs at a community level cannot be put in place to back it up?
The Mental Illness Fellowship of North Queensland, for example, costs its work out at $470,000, a figure it says will keep up with the need in the community.
The fact it will only receive $225,000 this year makes the future uncertain, and not only for the organisation.
The Mental Illness Fellowship helps individuals, families and communities cope with the impact of mental illness including providing housing and other support. Dropping programs will obviously have a negative effect on people. A series of meetings asking those affected what they could do without must have been something like balancing the family budget in hard times: Everything on the list is necessary but can we make do with beans on toast for a while longer?
Given the gravity of the problem facing Australia, it is time governments, at all levels, worked harder to provide services in this sector, rather than slashing budgets.
Grassroots bodies such as the North Queensland fellowship are the kinds of organisations which best operate in local communities. With research that suggests the stigma surrounding mental health issues is still a very real issue, government funding is needed more than ever, not only to provide support and programs for people dealing with mental health issues, but also to educate future care providers and the wider community in dealing with the problem.
Funds cut depressing
