~~ Day 1 ~~ The Nolans Backyard ~~

Image

Try to remember, Attany! Try to figure out why that barrel moved! She bit at the nail of her right thumb, her gaze was blind. The wet cloth now lay unnoticed at her knee, covering an open wound that didn’t bleed anymore. Mum always said: ‘There’s more between heaven and earth than we expect!’ Well, most of the time she said that while repairing her husband’s clothes and meant his gift to burn holes into it at the most impossible parts. But sometimes it had a deeper meaning.
What if... she whispered. She’s heard a lot of tales of people with supernatural gifts.
She threw a quick look around, searching for somebody who was might watching her, then she focused the cloth. Maybe I moved it with my thoughts. So she kept her look at the cloth and tried to imagine it flying into the air.
 ... Nothing...
This is so stupid! She almost laughed at her own naivety. Sure! Almighty Attany is able to move barrels and cloths only by using her mind power!
With a deep sigh she pulled the cloth off her knee and threw it back into the bucket.
This place is not good for me. I’m starting to lose my ... A new heavy wave of headache made her feel sick. OUCH! She reached up to her head with both hands.
Attany! It was Jacks voice, coming from inside the house.
Leave me alone, please! Attany didn’t answer, she was totally confused and a dull ache still knocked inside her head. She didn’t want Jack to see her like this.
Lovey? Jack’s voice came nearer, but Attany still didn’t reply, just sat there holding her head and hoping he wouldn’t see her. She tried to hold back the tears that were burning in her eyes now. Crying would make everything even worse!
There you are! His steps came closer and then she felt his hand at her shoulder. He knelt down in front of her. Lovey, are you okay?
She nodded, afraid that her voice would break if she would try to say something.
Yeah, I can see that! Jack said and pulled her hands away from her head.
Why do you hold your head, when everything’s alright, huh? Why are you so pale? Tell me what’s wrong! He lost his patience and said in a more sharp tone Tell me!
It’s only a headache, Jack. she managed to say.
Jack looked over her face, then his look became soft.
Attany knew this look... too well. Oh no, now he’ll say something that surely makes me cry.
I won’t fight. he announced.
You.... WHAT? Surprised Attany jumped up, not noticing the twinge in her knee and head. We gave up our old life and we’ve come that long way down from the north, you’ve spent all our money for the tournament and now you don’t want to fight? Her voice grew louder with every word she said. By all gods: WHY?
Jack sat down at the edge of the well deeply sighing and rubbed his forehead.
Because of you! I know there’s something wrong with you and as long as this is in my mind, I can’t concentrate on the fight. Your collapse, your headache! I couldn’t forgive myself if something bad would happen to you, while I’m trying to be a hero and beat those snooty-nosed knights!
But I told you, that I’m alr...
And I don’t believe you! he shouted.

What’s wrong?
None of them had noticed Faroin, who now stood at the other side of the backyard.
After a long gaze at Attany Jack said sarcastically: Nothing!
He stood up and disappeared inside the house.
Seem’s it’s a bad day for everyone of us, huh? Faroin asked. He came over to Attany, who had wrapped her arms around her body, biting her lip.
Wanna talk? he asked and touched her shoulder.
Attany just nodded and then began to sob.

Faroin found Jack lying at the bed, staring at the ceiling.
Can I come in? he asked and when Jack nodded he closed the door and sat down at the chest next to the door.
Attany told me, he began. She asked me to talk to you. You should fight, Jack.
Oh well, do you say so? Or is this what Attany told you to say? Jack sat up.
I think so too, Jack. I mean she’s right! You gave up our old live to start a new one and it would be... sorry, it would be stupid if you’d give up that chance! You’d always think of it, if you don’t try! You’d think: What if? And believe me, there’s nothing worse than that! A passed up opportunity will always be nailed into your head and you won’t get it out anymore.
Jack said nothing.
And... Faroin went on talking. I can keep an eye on Attany if you want me to. I mean, I’m good in taking care, that’s my job!
You’re taking care of horses! Jack replied, raising one eyebrow.
Ah, horses, women... where’s the difference? Faroin asked with a crooked smile.
Jack laughed. Maybe you’re right... He stood up and went over to the window. Outside he spotted Attany. She pulled up the bucket and washed her face with fresh water.
You know, I can’t lose her. Jack said.
Oh, I know. I’m sure it was the hard journey that exhausted her a bit. She’ll be fine soon. And you can rely on me. replied Faroin and patted Jacks shoulder. And now it’s time to go out and talk your problems over.
Jack slowly nodded. Okay. Hey, I’ll count on you!
Faroin held up his thumb. You can! But now I’ve gotta get back to work. A horse is missing. Big trouble!
Jack shook his head. So much for the taking care thing...

Attany sat at the edge of the well with her wet face held towards the sunbeams when she saw Farion leaving the house. He formed a “Good luck” with his lips and walked over to the alley. Right behind him Jack appeared in the door. Can we talk?
I’m sorry she started but Jack cut of her words.
No, let me talk first. He sat down in front of her feet. A bit confused she looked down at him, searching his face for something that would tell her his mood.
He cleared his throat before he began. Okay, Faroin and you... you’re both right. Maybe I overreacted a bit. The long journey, exertion... the nervousness before the tournament finally begins...
She swallowed. Oh Faroin, thank you so much!
You’re sure you’re okay? Jack asked.
It’s just a headache, Jack.
He nodded, and then looked down at his trousers. Think it’s time to get dressed for the tournament, don’t you think?

Day 1 - In the North

~~ At Chassalla – Noon ~~

The cries of Briseis still resounded in Miriamels ears. The baby girl yet cried for over 6 hours, all her little body was covered in sweat, her face already red swollen by tears.

Only SOME seconds of silence! Miriamel thought desperately and finally entered her private chambers. She jerked her green linen scarf from her neck, bashed it on the floor and sunk on her bed.

I can not go on any further. This is a nightmare here! Tears ran over her cheeks.
I hate this place! The silence between the walls … father’s dead body … the horrible storm at night … and the screams of that awful child!

Miriamel flung herself between the many pillows and started crying herself.
About what, she actually did not know. But it did her good – after some minutes, she decided to leave the bed and started dressing in black.

While combing her long blond hair, she looked out of the window. At once, she hurried to the pane and opened it. The whole ground was covered in hoarfrost, the midnight sun was shortly visible between dark clouds.

It is only early fall. Miriamel reminded herself. But then she noticed too, that most trees had already lost their leaves. How can this happen in only one night? We had a perfect late summer’s day yesterday! All farmers went on their fields for the harvests … and today it seems as if winters stands on the threshold!

Panic filled her stomach. She pulled the window shut, pinned her hair up and put a black veil over her head.

This is unnormal! I cannot stand this alone here! Miriamel told herself and rang for the handmaid.

A minute later, Mara, a young servant of thirteen years, stood pale-faced and anxiously on the threshold.

Girl, get my two travel trunks out of the small room and put some of my winter garment, underwear, boots, bonnets and hats as well as gloves together. And do not forget the black bear fur coat. Miriamel commanded coldly. Take a small suitcase for Lady Briseis clothing.

Mara did not stir.

What is going on with you, girl? Did you not understand? Miriamel asked impatiently.

Y-y-yes, m-m-mylady. Mara stammered. But, the nurse told me to tell you, that the Lady Briseis is still weeping … and there is something weird on her back, m-m-mylady.y Mara curtsied and hurried to the small room.

Five minutes later, Miriamel arrived in Briseis’s room.
The girl seemed to calm down, but kept on kicking her legs.

Leera, the wet nurse, sighed and gave Miriamel a sorrowful glance. There is something wrong, m’lady. This little lady is crying for half a day as if she’s in pain. Have a look at her back!

She turned Briseis and opened her dress. All that Miriamel could see, was a pink baby’s back.

Woman, you are hallucinating. There is nothing on her back!

Yeah, I thought so myself, m’lady. But look closer! Leera urged Miriamel.

Miriamel leaned over and eyed her niece’s back. Nothing … but then, she noticed something. Starting from over Briseis’ tailbone, just above her little bottom, three lines were visible – they somehow gleamed in the candle light.

Miriamel drew nearer . The filigree lines seemed to be “carved” in Briseis skin by a very talented artist. Sometimes they “glowed” golden … or rather blood-red? Miriamel shook her head in disbelief.

Am I daydreaming here? She argued with herself.

What is that nonsene about?! Miriamel asked loudly and tried to sound rather amused than frightened. Someone plays games with us, Leera. She gave a false laugh.

As you say, m’lady. Leera replied reluctantly.

Miriamel then pulled her right forefinger out and slowly approached Briseis’s skin.

When she came closer with her hand, Briseis became agitated. She did not start screaming, but fidgetted with her little arms and legs.

Hold still, Bris, please! Miriamel voiced under her breath and then, touched the right line on her niece’s back.

It came out from nowhere. The blood-red line burned like hellfire – darkness around Miriamel – and then she heard a very cold, deep voice speaking gently:

Be calm, my love. It will be over soon, I promise. You will soon be mine completely – not in need of this riffraff any longer.
Just hold on, my dear … only some time still … then you will eventually fullfill the praúfÐtja. Oh yes, you will, my precious.
Be comfortable, I will get you soon and then ...

In Miriamels mind, a face, covered with a cowl, became visible in the cold darkness – a pale male face with glowing green eyes and a cruel smile.

Image

She screamed frantically.

Day 1 - In the Banaty Mountains

~~ At the Royal Court – Noon ~~

For a quarter of an hour, he stood there on the wall – motionless, not even blinking for a second, even though the sunshine grew warmer with every minute. The air around him was filled with noises, excitement, laughing. Many people ran around, working and talking - their thoughts and wishes swirled through the air. Of course thoughts were “inaudible” to ordinary people, but not for an acolyte of the Old Force.

Image

But this time, Anakyr was not interested in the wishes and dreams of the smallfolk, they had never concerned him truly. He was focussed on something else. Since this morning’s meditation, he followed him, the grey wolf. The pack leader had had an agitating night, though the wolf had hided cunninly in the mist of dreams, where all trails got lost. But Anakyr winded, after he had cleared his mind and finished his spiritual lavation. It was through the sword exercise with his master, Sir Viggo, when he eventually “felt” him again. The feeling or better the cognition came out of a sudden, like the night before. But Anakyr had not time to “enjoy” the presence of the beast - the lack of attention costed him a blow by his master’s sword and a harsh reminder of the five ways of absolute concentration on the Force.

Later on, his master had some royal business to do, and left him to wander around the castle. He had never been at this sort of place – huge stoney walls and high halls, full of people, full of life and noises. It was interesting, how these bunch of different human beings lived and worked perfectly together – even without using the Old Force! He had watched several arrivals of people from all over the kingdom. Two people, a man and a woman, arrived in a cart shortly after dawn. They seemed to be excited of staying at the court, even though they did not belong to this part of the country – both had a strong northern accent – they were welcomed with open arms. Anakyr observed, how the man dealt with the woman, who seemed to be his frîjô – caring and gently in his behavior. As they obviously came from the North, Anakyr had been seduced by his curiousity to focus them to get some knowledge of the land he had travelled through. Suddenly, when both had almost entered the house, he had become aware of another presence. Neither his master, nor the wolf was present, but something or somebody else. He could only sense it, not see it, it was too distant, too shy and innocent, too “airy” in some way … well, maybe it had only been a shadow.

Afterwards he visited the stables, listened to the chitchat of the common people and the servants; and then, Anakyr eventually found the Lord’s Hall with the five white statues of the Warriors, the ancient religion of this kingdom. The marble statues had impressed him somehow, he could sense the faint breath of deity – gods, who had once been more powerful that any High Adept could ever been even by wielding the Old Force. In the North, they still stuck to the belief in the forefathers – Dolgerlot, Vemortar, Aluntur, Darimrol and Neneker. Aluntur reminded him of Teiwaz, Warder of War and Justice – the religion, his people believed in. He immediately suppressed the thought of his people and his country – the memory was still too painful.

While the day grew older and the sun reached its highest position in the cloudless sky, Anakyr finished his walk around the castle and stood on the inner castle wall, where he had a good view over the yard with the arena, several colorful tents, little booths with food and gewgaw, and of course a crowd of people spinning around. A pack of young maiden just came along, chatting and giggling, while goggling over to the young men at the entrance of the area who seemed to be part of the tournament lot.

Anakyr, while standing motionless on the wall, asked himself what this was all about. Was this the so-called “display”, ordinary people had to perform for finding their soulmate? His master never cared to tell him more about this funny human behavior, but well …

… and there he was – the grey wolf, his sudden presence almost overwhelming Anakyr. The shere power of ancient kind rolled over him and seemed to fill the whole courtyard.
Anakyr squinted – and also felt the sadness of the beast: the leader had lost a member of the pack again. And now, he wanted to search for it – despair and guilt dominated its thougths.

This time, Anakyr concentrated very hard on the Force. He quickly went through the three circles of elevation, and then, he was there – next to the wolf, unnoticed by it.

I should not stay in this bright sunlight – I do not need another headache! The wolf thought and wanted to turn around, but stopped dead, something in the yard catched its attention.

But Anakyr already watched the courtyard – another presence had aroused his interest.

It was the young woman, who had arrived early this morning and who now crossed the yard, followed by some girls. There was something ‘strange’ around this woman – Anakyr sensed again that “airy” presence while watching her. And then, the woman stopped, her face deathly pale, her gaze fixed on a low wall, on top of which a wooden barrel stood. The next moment, the barrel flew a few feet into the air – the woman was surrounded by transparent flames of fire – and when she slowly sank to the floor, a lucent phoenix leaped from her body and took to the skies …

Anakyr still gazed at the unconscious woman down in the courtyard, when he suddenly became aware, that the wolf had disappeared. Not disappeared in fact, but – changed somehow. Anakyr concentrated again and forced all his mind into the Force … mist and brightness surrounded him … in the faint distance he heard voices, speaking to each other. But he could not see anyone. Then a dog barked, Anakyr swirled around, but the barking seemed to come from everywhere like the whispers who surrounded him … and then – utter silence.

Anakyr came to consciousness when he pushed hard against the balustrade. The sun burnt merciless down on the castle, Anakyr was not able to open his eyes until some minutes past by. A pain in his head grew stronger with every second – this time, he surely went too far. What would his master say when he eventually told him about this?

Then, Anakyr became aware of a woman, who lay next to him on the floor, her eyes tightly pressed shut. Sweat shone on her forehead, her hands clenched to fists.
Her thoughts shot like arrows through his mind.

… don’t worry … will return to you soon! … go back … go back … now!

Anakyr stared in amazement at the lady. Is she really talking to anyone in this … sort of dream? He wondered curiously.

But before he could even try to enter her world of consciousness, a cold voice distracted him.

What is going on here? Who are you? What in the name of all forefathers …!!!
A fine lord came along the arcade and glared at Anakyr and the lady at his feet.

What are you doing, man! What has happened her?! Anger and hospitility spit out of the eyes of this man, who kneeled down at once and gently touched her cheeks.

Slynt, Braas, Kervan, come over here! He commanded coldly and three members of the Royal Guard appeared immediately.

Slynt, Braas, bring the Lady Castell to the Riverwinds rooms and see that Lady Riverwinds tends her. Kervan, He turned to the man, who looked very familiar to him. You should have a talk with this young fellow he … But Keanu Riverwinds only pointed at thin air – Anakyr had already vanished.

Royal Castle ~ The Tournament Starts

Attany was so proud when she watched Jack leaving the house. He wore his best trousers and a new shirt. His armour wasn’t needed at the moment.
Now, that she also wore her best dress, she headed towards the fighting arena.
Her heart bet up to her neck when she entered the area for the ignobly born folks. She found a place, from where she was able to overview the whole arena. Next to her two maidens where whispering with each other.
Oh, I’ve heard there will be a lot of ignobly born fighters this time, said the taller one of them.
Keep your eyes open, maybe you can find a brave one for your bed! answered the second and both of them giggled.
Attany smiled about what the girls were saying and thought – with a little bit of pride- One of those braves is mine.

Her eyes wandered across arena. The midday’s sun was reflected by the shields and helmets of the guards, the wind playeg with the different banners and flags and again a bird of prey drew its lazy circles at the cloudless, blue sky.
The grandstand of the noble society was a sea of colourful dresses, jerkins, shawls and caps. Beautiful ladies wore silk, velvet and fine linen decorated with pearls, golden and silver thread and sparkling jewels.
All of a sudden her clothes felt itchy and she looked down at what she called her “best” dress. Self-made, rough wool in the usual poor people’s “sheep”-colours: tan, black and light brown. But at least the bodice had a very nice embroidery she had created herself.

Suddenly a fanfare resounded and brought her back into the here and now.
A herald stepped into the middle of the arena and unrolled a scroll.
Our Royal Majesty, King Erictor! he shouted.
The maidens next to Attany stopped chattering and so did the whole arena.
The fanfare resounded again and then Attany saw the king for the first time.
She noticed how tall and handsome he was. And like all people around her she was fascinated by his appearance. His dark-blue and golden jerkin was a masterpiece but even without it everyone would have been able to recognize the king. Everything part of him expressed nobility.
Erictor waved at his folks and sat down at the festively decorated huge seat.
An old man at his right whispered something and Ericor nodded then he gave a short nod to the herald.

And now! the herald went on. Your Majesty King Erictor of Banaty Kingdom, my highly thought of Ladies and Lords! It’s a big pleasure and honour to introduce our brave fighters to you! With wide gestures the herald pointed at a tent next to the arena entrance and a long line of men entered the scene.
After they lined up, the herald continued his speech with a loud voice and finally started to introduce the ignobly born fighters in alphabetic order.
One by one the men stepped forward, bowed to the noble society and ranged back at their places.
Gareth Galway! the herald shouted. Lumberman near Royal Fort.
The man next to Jack stepped forward and made a deep bow to the king, then stepped back into the row.
Jacob Hughman! Armorer and blacksmith from the North!
Jack also stepped forward while the herald introduced him to the spectators, his eyes were resting at the king who returned his look with warm, dark eyes.
Jack bowed low like everyone before him, but then turned around and also took a bow to the ignobly born mob. Single people started to applaud then more and more clapped their hands. One of them was Attany who waved at her husband and blew a kiss.
The maiden next to Attany started whispered: Oh, look at him! What a man! and she also blew a kiss towards Jack.
Attany was shocked in some way. How for all gods could that girl dare to blow Jack a kiss? If only I could... Attany thought, when suddenly the maidens headscarf slipped down over her eyes. She jerked and while she still fought with her headscarf to get it back up (it was like glued), Attany turned her look back at Jack and tried to hide a grin. I did it!

When Jack got back into the row, the applause turned down and he let his look run over the stages of the noble society. Cold gazes, at least from the dukes and lords. Only a few of the ladies had put an almost invisible smile at their faces and only King Erictors mimic had not changed. His look still lay at Jack.
Lucan Hunt! the herald continued and the guy on Jacks right moved forward.
They will tear you in pieces, Jacob Hughman. Gareth whispered from the left side.
Why? Jack answered with low voice.
A bow is for the noble people, not for the mob. Gareth groaned.
A knight has to swear to defend and serve his country. So why not taking a bow to everyone of its people?
In the meantime the herold went on. Ruben Huntington! Trader from North Wall!
First Gareth didn’t answer Jacks question, then he said: My name’s Gareth, but everybody says Canny.
I’m Jack.
From the corner of his eye he saw Canny smile.
Good luck to you, Canny. he whispered.
The same to you, Jacob Hughman.

Day 1 ~ In a clearing ~

While the court was bustling with chatter and energy, while everyone got up to get ready for the big event Eneit did explain the whole story again and again. It started to dawn already but the clearing was still deep in darkness. And Tina listened to the story of her and unknown others being hope for the kingdom and couldn’t believe it. She had lost all her feeling for time and place because it was far too much and too ridiculous to believe at all. Above all eying that old man and to imaging he was supposed to be her master who is to tell her the secrets of her newly discovered gift. If it was a gift at all and not just a weird accident. She had to admit it would be amazing to be part of a secret circle. It would be fun to escape the boredom of the royal court with all these pernickety ladies and wanna-be knights which she, in better times, would have fought easily. An advantage of having many brothers, just an advantage she can’t use. But this did sound all too visionary to be true and this was clearly written on her face.

Tinushka why you don’t believe in words older as Eneit? Words from bearer to bearer given? You not feel truth in heart’s bottom?

Vadderchen you tell me stories which sound like fairytales. Stories about things that can’t be true and even if so. You tell about four people. Four families which have this faith and we’re all about to meet at the court? And besides even if there are three known people what happens with the last person? The one who is said to have the spell? If I’m not mistaken it won’t work without this last piece. So please, why did you come and made my life a mess when it’s impossible to fulfil this so-called faith? She shot an angry glance over to the old man.

Eneit admit that problem is not to have fourth person. But hope has that heirloom of ladies will show way to fourth piece in great danger times.

Oh fine, I ever wanted to go on a treasure hunt with people I don’t know to find something I have no idea of, brilliant! And I’m really crazy to have left the castle for this. She made a huge gesture that comprised the whole clearing. What on earth made me leave head over heels to come here? To gamble with my life, my future and all the people I care? I must have been insane!

Lando pretty aware of his mistress excitement growled.

And, she put her finger on Eneit’s chest do not tell me it was because of some inner force I also inherited something like a danger alarm clock.

The old man shrugged.

What if? Even hurting old Eneit not would change truth. And you see here you are! Not is the greatest proof of what I have told?

Tinushka sank down on an old tree trunk, rested her head in her arms and a huge sigh emerged from her breast.

She got up again

And why me?

The old man eyed her and shrugged Fate, destiny, luck? No one ways know life is going. As matter of fact you have chance always saying yes or no. Choice given always to this or that way and you need asking heart what it tells you to do.

Suddenly he startled and chuckled. See, see lady has found out. Tinushka turned watching her dog that just jumped on his feet and barked. Shhhh Lando – down! Be a good dog!

Oh dear you amazed is if knowing what lovely doggy is and so Eneit went over, where he kneeled down next to the Labrador to pad the dogs head.

It is good to meet you. Power is growing I see but help you will need to control it. Eneit will try to help and is looking forward to second meeting in Banaty Mountains. No need to worry – friend is safe and will return soon.

What the… Tina looked at the old man and the dog. What is going on?

Powers are growing. Powers are rising. You not feel it? He strokes his beard. Soon third will reveal skills if not having already and so you ladies will unite. There hope is. And Tinushka has to return to castle in bit...

What? She stared at him. Do I look as if I’m keen on committing suicide? Do you have an idea what it means to leave your husband? They will tar and feather me. Let me to the crucial test. Never on earth am I going back to court. How to face my husband? How to look at the people’s eyes? All these hags who were hissing behind my back. Never. I’d rather go and run for cover. And what was with Lando?

Surprised you are when finding out things are not that complicated. And surprised that not is only you who has discovered gift. And more surprised who that was. But can’t tell now have to wait to meeting of hope.

And a soft flap was to be heard.

Day 1 ~ The Return~

Out of the dark something appeared and landed close to the two of them.

Hawk Tinuashka turned with a start. Where the hell…

It is always a fault to underestimate people. Do underestimate birds who can hunt their prey and out of the dark a tall figure stepped.

What…

Shut up Tristanir shot a glance over to her. It’s not up to you to talk. Be happy it’s me and not a royal search party looking for you. You are silent until I give you the right to talk again. And don’t dare… he left the sentence unfinished and turned to face the old man.

It’s said we always meet twice in our life. But I must admit it would’ve loved not to see you again old man

Good boy, again I say fate is not asking for things we want or love. Duties come with it and pain. Above all in times we have. It’s times we need listen to hearts and do things others won’t forget maybe. Eneit shrugged. Amazed is you remember old Eneit

Story Teller Tristanir laughed hoarsely I hardly can forget the times you gathered the whole place around the fire in the village’s centre. and his eyes got lost in long forgotten times. Times where he still had his family long before he was taken to join the forces join an army he didn’t want to be part of. But they took all young boys old enough to learn how to handle a sword and if they had the skills of using the one or the other weapon they had no chance to stay where they were used to live.
But I didn’t come to talk about old times. I came to claim my right by marriage. This … searching for the right word he looked his wife over that left me in the middle of the night to appear in this forest with an old guy. He took a deep breath and his voice rose You made a dork out of me. Treated me like an idiot, who the hell do you think you are and what the hell did you think you did? His fist hit a near tree I’m a knight and you my lady we have to live up to certain rules and limits. We can’t go and leave whenever we think we want. The whole castle is talking behind my or our back. He came closer and his voice rose even more. His eyes shot daggers on her, his fist clenched. What did you think you did when you left? Is there anything underneath that blonde hair that is doing something like thinking before it acts? That knows that all things we do is tightening things most often not too nice things? If I could do like I want I’d drag you back to the castle and pillory you. He came to a hold in front of her. His fingers took her chin in a brutal grasp and forced her to look at his face. But I can’t do that not because I don’t want to or because I feel sympathy for you standing there, not today, but there’s a reputation, a face to be saved, it would impair me as much as you. But I have an idea what to do with you. After the tournament, after the feast you’re going to stay in a lonely hermitage in the Banaty Forest for a bit. Without your dog, your horse and anything else you could use for your leisure or what you love. You are going to think about your actions and during that time you do not have any contact to somebody. The only person who is bringing you certain things is someone I’ll chose and now come with me. There’s a breakfast you will probably miss but you’ll definitely stay at my side during the festivities. With a happy face to proof everyone wrong who is telling that there’s a lady lost. I already gave the Master of the horses and the little fellow who’s helping you a little gold to keep their mouths shut.

It was not really Tinashka’s behaviour to listen to accusations without a word but she knew it wouldn’t end bitterly if she’d answer him back. She looked back at Eneit and hoped for help from this side.

Told you, didn’t I He giggled. Go time not ripe is yet, but soon. Three women have to meet before can go on. Go and take care. Take care of you and the little one.

With this the old man seemed to vanish. To melt with his surrounding and suddenly he was gone.

Come, or do you want to feel what it means when I make you to follow me.

Evening Day 1 ~ The Nolans home ~

The small room was filled with the smell of warm bread, smoke and the twin’s laughter. The girls ran around, carrying plates and knives to the table, chasing each other.
Girls, be careful! Marah threw another piece of wood into the fire. Little sparks ascended into the air and the smell of soup rose from the pot hanging above the flames.

Jack sat in the far corner at the table. He seemed in thoughts, not very happy nor sad. Attany cut the cold beef into slices and Lenus put some more chairs around the table.
Dad should be back by now, he said and threw a worried look at the door.
He’ll be home soon, son. Marah replied. He has a lot to do with all those horses of the noble men at the moment.
Suddenly there was a rumbling outside and a tall man appeared in the door.
DADDY! The twins flew into his arms and didn’t let go off him before each of them got a kiss at their head.
Marah filled the soup into a big bowl and carried it to the table.
Dinner! she announced.
When Faroin came over to the table she stopped him. Oh no sir, you change your clothes first!
Now the others noticed what Marah called “Faroins perfume”, a mix of hay, wet horse and dung.
Yeah, Daddy stinks! Fianna proclaimed.
Young lady, it’s not polite to say daddy stinks! Faroin answered.
Fianna seemed obviously confused. But you said we always have to tell the truth!
Marah and Attany started giggling and now confused himself, Faroin mumbled That girl whether will make me proud one day or she will bring me into the grave!
While Faroin changed his clothes Lenus put a golden bull with red horns in the middle of the table and then sat down next to Jack. Attany and Jack exchanged a look. Both had heard of the religion at the Royal Castle.
Faroin also sat down now, wearing a white shirt and simple brown trousers. Lenus?
The family lowered their look at the golden bull and Lenus prayed: Good Lord in heaven, thank you for this great meal we’ve received through your grace. Thank you for our nice guests and… thank you for making Mum let us have a bit of thin beer this evening. He smiled, satisfied with himself.
Thank you, son. Let’s eat. said Faroin and dipped his spoon into the soup.
Suddenly Fianna shouted: Daddy! and a bit of bread spread over her plate.
Swallow, Fi, and then talk! Farion said with a rigid tone in his voice and Fi promptly swallowed a mouth full at once. Daddy, Jack was great today! Really great! Everyone loves him! Thick Margy said he’s already a hero! And she said he’s gonna be the winner of the tourment! She grinned proudly, showing some food between her teeth.
First, Fi, it is called a “tournament” and second: he doesn’t look to optimistic, answered Faroin and asked: What’s wrong, friend? Are you worried?
Jack shrugged. The two… uhm… the sword fighters. They were pretty good.
Attany’s left eyebrow rose. Oh, Jack! They were okay, but they can’t compare to you.
She winked at Lenus and the boy nodded eagerly.
Who won? asked Marah between two bites.
Lenus shrugged. The Prince, of course! But Sir Lancehot was so much better, he let the Prince win, everyone could see that!
Attany agreed. It really looked like the swordmaster was better.
Liliana sighed.
What’s wrong, sweetie? asked Marah, but Liliana didn’t answer. She just sat there and stared at her plate. Fianna replied instead She loves Prince Orlandolas. She told me she’ll marry him when she’s old enough.
It was a secret. whispered Liliana close to tears.
It almost broke Faroin’s heart when he saw Liliana’s face turn red in shame. He always worried a bit about her, because she was so shy and silent, so different to her sister. So he pulled her from the bench and on his lap.
Sweetie, you’re way too good for Prince Orlandolas. We’ll find a good man for you. A strong man who loves you as if you were a princess yourself. Okay?
Fianna nodded but still didn’t look too happy.
Okay, bed time! announced Faroin and Liliana slid down from his lap.
But Dad! Tonight’s the jugglers night! We can’t miss that! contradicted Lenus.
Marah lifted her forefinger. Young man, you heard what your father said! End of debate! She had noticed that undertone in her husband’s voice.
The children left the table grumbling.

When they lay in their beds and the food has been put away, Faroin threw a small bag at the table. It jingled as if there were coins in it.
What’s that? Marah asked.
The payment for a lie was Faroins answer. He sat up straight in his chair and started his story, watched by the other three people around the table…
Jack, I already told you, that we missed a horse this morning. Jack nodded.
It was Lady Tinushka’s.
Who’s that Lady Tinushka? asked Attany.
Faroin frowned. She’s Sir Tristanir’s wife. I’ve seen the couple before, even talked to them. She seems to be a nice Lady. Always treated me well when I prepared her horse and she seemed to love animals. She has a dog that never leaves her side. But back to story now. When I came back to work after this short visit here, my boss called me into the hay barn and closed the door. And there in the dark he stood. Sir Tristanir. He gave me the money to keep the fact of the missing horse sealed behind my lips and to tell the people that Lady Tinushka got a message to head back home because of an emergency.
Silence.
Marah was the first one to speak again. So she ran away. She left him. Why else would he pay for a lie if not to save his face?
We don’t know that for sure, Marah Faroin replied. And please don’t tell anybody, okay? I told you that, because I want you to know the right answer when somebody’s asking you. You are the wife of somebody who could know something. So I want you to say, that she had to go home. Attany, Jack please do the same. If the truth comes out, then we all know that very bad things can happen to the Lady.
Jacks hand slid into Attanys and she put her head on his shoulder. What happens then? Attany asked breathless.
Faroin cleared his throat. We know a story about a Lady who left her husband. Everybody laughed at him. When he finally found her, he brought her to Loch Sanderstone and left her on a tiny island with no food. Some say that he sat at the shore of the Loch and listened to her far screams. First she screamed for forgiveness, then she screamed for food. Nobody dared to help her, because her husband was a very brutal man and then they saw her jump into the water. She drowned.
Attany’s eyes widened. That can’t be true… How can someone be so cruel? she whispered.
I’m afraid it is. Faroin said. And that should be reason enough for us to keep up to the story of Sir Tristanir. Who knows to what bad things he’s able to?
Everyone nodded.
I don’t feel like watching jugglers tonight anymore. Attany said and stared into the fire.

Morning to afternoon Day 1 ~Tinushka & Tristanir~

They were on their way for quite a time now. Hawk circled over two horses which rode one after the other followed by the dog. There was nothing to be heard than the soft noise the horses’ hooves left on the woods moos and the normal noises of a forest at night. After a while Tristanir made his horse going slower to catch up with his wife.

What I tried to understand ever since I read your letter this morning, ever since you left me I was wondering if you really hate it so much to be married with me? Is it that bad to be my wife? To be on my side?

His voice was merely a whisper.

They rode along and she didn’t reply. Wondering he turned his head to see if she understood, when Tinushka started to speak.

To be honest, I can’t give you an answer. She sighed. I do not have the feeling to be married at all. When do I see you? When are you around to share your life with me? When do we have time to be a married couple at all? I haven’t seen you more than 3 times within the last 12 months and during that time I was locked up in this castle. With a gesture she made him stop when he wanted to interrupt. I know it’s your duty but you do not make me feel as if you did miss me at all. Do you know that I do envy Hawk at times? He’s with you all the time, gets your attention and I’m feeling like a nice attachment you can do with once in a while. I left my home, my country and my family for you and now I’m alone. I do not even have my familiar surroundings any longer since I was to live on the royal court. I’m not allowed to ride out alone, I have no duties to do and I hate this stupid needlework. I always did. Too sit around with brainless Ladies and to gossip about things I’m not interested in or people I do not even know is wasted time. I want to have my freedom back. My duties. My life. I’m not one of these royal dollies who never made themselves dirty, who think everybody not being of royal birth is not worthy of all the advantages they enjoy daily. This world’s so wrong.

Another break when they rode along through the forest.

You know once I was the happiest woman on earth. To be your spouse to be on your side was a dream that came true. A dream all young girls have and it was a wonderful time in the beginning. And then you were awarded with Skye Manor, what a great day! I simple loved it. I could go and chat and laugh with the servants without earning a raised eyebrow and whispers behind my back. Have you an idea what this castle means to me? I fell like a bird in a cage and you’d never put Hawk in a cage.

You were pretty aware when we married and you came with me that I’m the King’s man and the King does not care about the personal things when there are things to do. You did know that and now you’re complaining like a kid. I would love to stay more often as well but I can’t. I have my duties as well and to take you from Skye Manor is just for your safety. It’s too dangerous to let you stay there. I explained it to you earlier. Times are rough we do not know what is happening next. Due to the current situation all highwaymen, thieves and vermin like that are hiding to strike whenever they see a chance to gain something. Can’t you understand that it’s also for my own salvation to see you safe behind the castle’s walls? I do not want to be away and to have to worry about you all the time. I know how careless you are. I also don’t want it to be forever that way but so far my hands are tied right now. I can’t get enough men to guard Skye Manor.

She said nothing and they continued their way.

We are heading South? Tinushka sounded surprised.

You’re going to stay at Skye Manor until Dagonet comes to take you back to the castle. He does me the favour. Then you arrive you’ll get ready and we attend the jugglers night together so that everyone can see you’re back. When you go there you’ll tell our remaining servants that you heard someone is injured and needed help. Then you can spend your time however you want.

By the way we are there. Tristanir pointed to their house which was set beautifully on the foot of a mountain. You’re going alone from now. I do not want to be seen.

He turned his horse.

We speak later. I trust you and if you even think of going away again think of what happened to this one Lady at Loch Sanderstone. Not that I want to do that but it might be worth one or two more thoughts.

And vanished into the forest.

*****

With a cheer Tinushka spurred Briena and headed towards her home.

Home, I’m coming!

When she entered the court she slipped from Briena’s back and run towards the front door.

Stop, who are you? Turn slowly and show your face.

She spun around.

But Remus it’s me.

The old man looked at her in disbelief but immediately took a bow

My Lady, it’s a pleasure you’re back.

Instead of the formal answer she came over and hugged the old man.

It’s so good to be back. But now tell me who’s ill or injured. I heard about and came as soon as possible.

Am I not a good wife? She thought sneeringly.

Still blushed about this unusual treatment the old man shook his head.

I do not know from anyone harmed. And we aren’t that many who are left. I’m sorry. But please, see yourself.

After a short while she was sure that no one was hurt and indeed from the once 20 servants remained eight. Cella the cook headed towards the kitchen to conjure a meal for her mistress. Remus was eager to show her all buildings to prove that they’re still clean and in best condition. They met Ian at the stables where he just brushed a beautiful stallion in the deepest black Tinushka’s ever seen. But even the stables were partly empty.

Mylady. He bowed. Beautiful horse, isn’t it?

Indeed it is. She stroke the horses neck. Will you do me the favour to have a small lunch with me later, when Cella’s ready?

It would be a pleasure.

Any time they all sat around the table in their kitchen, cheered and chatted about old times and how the last weeks treated them. Tinushka learned that many of their servants were sent home but still got a little wage which was not usual and she felt a flush of love for her husband.

It was too soon, when Remus bustled out of the kitchen to bring back Dagonet a moment later.

Lady Tinushka, will you please come with me back to the court?

But he had not much choice and was pushed on the bank behind the table where he got a mug of beer and a plate of meat with bread. Surely he needed to gain new strength for the trip back and so another hour went by until the two of them left after a lot of handshaking and good byes.

*****

In the meantime Tristanir arrived at the castle and headed right to Lady Luinary’s chambers and knocked on the door. Luinary’s chambermaid opened and after consulting her mistress Luinary’s came to the door herself.

Lady Luinary’s he bowed clearly aware that the ears of a bunch of curious women grew bigger and bigger I bring news of my wife Lady Tinushka. She’s inconsolable but she can’t attend your breakfast because an emergency occurred at our estate and she left immediately to look after our servants.

He gave her a knowing look, bowed and withdrew to hurry towards the rooms where the Royal Council took place.
