Re: Legends from your country
@Kasel, dear, yes I like this legend a lot.
Thanks!
@Star,honey, thanks for the info.I'll try to search the film and see it.I'm curious now..
Well, another italian legend.
THE STORY OF THE BEFANA
Many centuries ago, King Herod decreed that the first born male child and each male child born in that year was to be slain. It was his desire to kill the child reported to have been born the new "King." Soldiers rampaged villages throughout the country murdering male children. One mother became so stricken with grief that she was unable to cry nor accept the loss of her son. She looked and looked around her house for her baby son. She became convinced that her child was not dead, but instead lost. She placed all her child’s belongings onto a tablecloth and bundled it at the end to carry it over her shoulder and set out searching from house to house for him.
To this young mother it seemed much time had passed as she searched yet, in only a few days, she came upon a child. Convinced that she had found her lost son, she placed the cloth sack containing all her son’s belongings at the base of the manger where the child laid. The young father gazed at the face of this stranger bearing gifts and wondered about the many years in this old woman’s past. Her face had many lines and her hair was fully grayed.
The child was Jesus Christ and in gratitude to the "OLD" woman’s generosity, He gave the woman a wonderful blessing. One night a year for all eternity, the woman He named "La Befana" for "giver of gifts," would have all the children of the world as her own. On that night, she would be able to visit each one, bringing them clothing and toys. The night is January 5 each year and the morning of January 6, children all over Italy find their stockings filled with sweet curly candy for being very good or a dark piece of coal if they have been bad. During the night of La Befana’s visit, she is hosted by each family with a plate containing broccoli and spice sausage plus a small glass of wine.
In modern time, La Befana is only seen on rare occasions and indeed lives in the imaginations of small children.
Another version:
The three Kings stopped at La Befana’s house on their way to Bethlehem. After dining with her, they invited her to follow them in their search for the Christ child. She said no since she needed to wash and clean.
After a while she changed her mind, and gathered up some items from her home to give to the Christ child. At last, she wasn’t able to find the three Kings nor the baby Christ child. She’s been searching ever since. So every January 5th and the morning of January 6th, children all over Italy find their stockings filled with sweet curly candy for being very good or a dark piece of coal if they have been bad.
Sweet story, isn't it??

Re: Legends from your country
Very sweet legend
I have another one...
THE MARUXAINA'S LEGEND
In the north of Galicia exists a place called "Os Farallóns" where tradition says that lives a beautiful siren named "Maruxaina".
This siren appears in the days of tempest singing beautiful songs.
Some people say that her intention is wicked , and she tries to attract the sailors towards the rocks to make them to sink.
Others say that Maruxaina tries to alert the sailors of the danger.
One day, the people of the towm decided to capture the siren making sound the horns in their ships not to hear her sweet voice and put off the lights of the houses not to be seen by her.
In this town, every year in summer, people celebrate a feast in which the whole people come to the beach and simulate to catch to the siren with their ships, making sound their hooters and leaving the town in the dark.
The Maruxaina is led to the square of the town and submitted to a judgement in which, year after year, goes out absolved and begins a great party.

Re: Legends from your country
Babila, beautiful story mate, I absolutely loved it.
Kasel, Your story was lovely, old sea legends are my favorites.
Thankyou dear girls, wonderful storys.
This is an Aboriginal legend about the Bunyee Bunyee's or Bunyip's.
For a long time, the Elders were puzzled to know what had become of many of their young men who had gone out hunting and never returned. They would track these men to the edge of a lagoon, but there the tracks would disappear. Eventually the tribe developed such a dread of this place that they stopped fishing there.
One day, one of the Elders had a strange dream that the missing men were held in a cave near the lagoon. He decided to go to their rescue. When he reached the lagoon he swam across to the other side looking for a cave in the rock face. Just then two fearful creatures, Bunyee Bunyees, broke from the water. They were about four times the size of the largest dogs, covered with grey hair, with stumpy tails, four legs, hooves like horses, ferocious teeth and the tusks of a wild boar.
The creatures tried to chase him back into the water but he ran along the bank, following a line of footprints. Up ahead he could see the dark entrance to a cave. He carefully stepped inside. Bones littered the floor. He noticed a movement up ahead. Here were the missing members of his tribe!
‘You too?’ they moaned. ‘Soon the Bunyee Bunyees will have the whole tribe captive here. We will never escape.’ And they sank upon the ground in despair.
‘Wait,’ said the new arrival, ‘I told the tribe that if I didn’t return from this journey by dusk, they were to follow and listen.’ Then he began to strike his yamstick hard against the roof of the cave. The sound echoed far and wide. Just as it seemed that they would never be rescued there came the sound of digging from above.
Anxiously the captives waited until at last a ray of light appeared. Then a fishing net strong enough for them to climb up was lowered down to them.
There was great rejoicing in the camp that night. The Elders put their rain stones in the fire and sang their drought songs until the lagoon dried up. Strange to say, in the dried-up lagoon the bones of the Bunyee Bunyees were never found

Re: Legends from your country
Thank you all so much for these stories! It was a pleasure to read it After so many beautiful and touching legends I'll try to tell you one as well.
OK it's my turn
The Legend is about a ring in the lattice of this well in Nuremberg. You can find it on the central market next to the Church of our Lady. It was build in 1385 and replaced in 1835 out of a more steadfast material.
Master Kuhn who builded the lattice round the well had a daughter named Margret who was wooed by one of his trainees. But her father didn't want a poor husband for her and so he forbade this courtship and fired the boy. It's said that he said: "It'll never happen! Like you'd never manage that the rings at the well lattice could be turned." The master hit the road and the trainee wanted to show that he's able to make it and so he made a ring surreptitious.
Then he sliced it and put it into the lattice, soldered, hammered and rasped it so that nobody could see the joint. After that he left town and never came back.
When the master returned home he noticed that he acted too severely. He regreted the dismissal and he'd loved to have the clever and skilful apprentice back but it was too late and Margret cried her eyes out.
It's said that you get as many children as often you turn the ring. Even today young couples who came out of the city hall (is next to the well and the registry office is in it) turn the ring.
Another legend says that you have a wish for free - anything you want. Because all tourists turn it (also natives) somebody made this Click me
It's also said that the golden ring is the wrong and the black across from it is the right one.
***************************************
My co-worker turned it (the black) a few months after she miscarried and 10 months after that she got a baby girl
