OK  Let's see if I can answer you.
When you pay for premium you can choose if you want to be visible in the 'Who is online list' or not. The board 'counts' your visit but your nickname isn't seen.
The invisible user here is usually me lol Old habit -shrugs- I was member of boards whose owners were almost offended when you came by without posting, so invisible wasn't bad 
But of course everybody else who is premium and comes over can be invisible too. But I suppose no one but that person knows who he/she is.
And yeah you're right. White boxes with a red X are usually pictures that don't exist any longer or better the URL/path is broken.
Does it happen to you many times?

Oh yes, all the time. It seems no matter what - e-mails or coming in here onto the chat threads - boxes with X's don't work.
Somebody told me she once 'right' clicked on a box and got a menu asking her if she wanted the picture to show & it worked - but that was only one time.
But I now know that there isn't a secret that I didn't know about. 
And thanks for explaining 'invisible'.

But you do see pictures too? Just curious because I read you can switch it on and off anywhere if you want to see them or not 
In mails it often happens because some mail providers do not support pictures due to viruses and leave it up to you to show it or not. Or they got lost in the www highway or because someone forwarded it in a wrong way

Oh yes, I see lots of pictures coming across in e-mails & the postings here-
its just those boxes with 'X's'.

Ah then it's all fine  I was afraid you don't see pictures as all. If you want to find out if it's just you who gets the box here on the board, just ask if others see it too 
Older pictures usually vanishes after a whole

I'll have to remember that - about asking others if they get the picture in the box with the 'X'. Now, I am on the computer at work most of the time - and I can't remember what happens at home on my Apple computer.
