Devon Soul

I started a topic on the Guardian music talk. My guess is that it will be deleted fairly soon so here is a backup.

Guardian music talk-Devon Soul

Frank Skinner was fairly typical of media comment in his interview with Joss Stone. He expressed surprise that anyone could have a knowledge of soul music and come from Devon.

My thought is a) well, why not? and b) maybe a lot of soul music is partly country anyway.

There may not be any reason why people in Devon should know about country music.

Guardian readers have been generally hard to convince that Devon is a centre for soul music. They seem to think Frith Street is more crucial. They may well be right. Joss Stone told Frank Skinner that she also spent some time in Dover and now lives mostly in the USA.

So my current conclusion is that Devon is much like other parts of the UK. You can hear some old records, which is no bad thing.

Meanwhile on Sunday there will be at least some actual soul music in Devon.

Re: Devon Soul

I,ve lived in Devon for 17 years and have mixed with some of the most exceptional soul musicians and singers this planet has to offer, just because they aren't famous doesn't mean they can't be good.
Too much store is laid on how well you are known or how far up the charts you go and frankly most of the music you hear in the charts is souless and egotistic bull**** made for generating large amounts of cash in as short a time as possible for the lowest common denominator in slush love songs and 'hardcore' rock, or ripped off backing tracks with **** drumbeats laid on top and repeated lyrics that bore the soul to distraction.
Just take a look at the musicians on this board and tell me any of them have no soul, Ben Goddard, Triggerfish, the Worry Dolls, Stuart Wills, Simon Barron, Wiredaisies, Matt Franklin, Matt Roberts, Mimosa etc etc, the list goes on and on, none of them famous but all ****ing amazing in their own right.
All across the world there are singers, musicians, songwriters artists with more soul in their little finger than most of the rubbish the media throw into our living rooms and our lives and none of them are signed or even want to be.
Come to see them for yourselves if you think you've seen the best.

Re: Devon Soul

Well after the Joss Stone concert last night I am completely confused as to what Devon soul might be. There was only a couple of numbers that might have been country, most of it was pop moving to rock.

Maybe it's just me, I found it very loud. Put the drummer in a basement somewhere else and mix in 25% of the sound, that's what I would do. But then I found Back to Basie to be a bit louder than expected. I only go out occasionally as you can guess.

Either the reviews have not been that accurate or the act is getting tighter over time. There was only one fit of giggles, in the middle of a song about wanting to left alone. This was rather ridiculous and she did fall over but an attendant appeared with a cloak. This helped her recover and she was soon able to throw off the cloak and get back into the song. The drummer kept things together during this interlude so maybe he needs to have line of sight.

I still think musicians and other people in Devon should try to work out where Joss Stone is coming from. Educational resources might need to include Al Green CDs for example. There is a training aspect to Animated Exeter but not a lot for Vibraphonic.

Any suggestions on what form this could take? Or views on the concert? The Guardian is missing a review on the tour so maybe a collection of postings would add to the record.
