Tanglewood Stu... A Brief History
Hi Music type peeps!
My sister, Jo (aka Morgan), also a singer/songwriter/guitarist, wrote a piece about me once for a music magazine, so I'll post that. Saves me writing it all over again!.. Yes, I know it's lazy but here it is:
-----
Tanglewood Stu - A Brief History of Existence
by Jo (aka Morgan)
Stu's (aka The Technician, aka Tanglewood Stu) media career began musically, in 1988, at the impressionable age of 11, with many school drum lessons and a rather dodgy 3-piece kit. Sunday afternoons were never quite the same after being serenaded for hours on end with an unaccompanied eight beat, heavily accented on the bass drum.
Several years and large amounts of percussion later, Stu began learning the guitar. His first experiences of bands derived from a permanently distorted Nirvana/Green Day tribute trio, which he formed with two very keen, if a little tone deaf, friends. As if the Sunday drumming soiree wasn't enough, Stu then inflicted over five hours of indistinguishable noise on his family every Saturday for the best part of a head throbbing year.
Needless to say, this breakthrough in musical originality didn't get anywhere and so they disbanded (much to the relief of the neighbours who had become exceptionally skilled at fashioning earplugs from cotton wool).
At 19 Stu began two years of formal audio recording training at Red C Music 16 track recording studio an Hayle, Cornwall. Every Tuesday morning at 4.30am Stu dutifully got up, caught a train and walked over a mile to the studio.
After putting in a full days work and the walk back to the station, Stu usually slept through the return journey, often dreaming about the optimal acoustic microphone placement for recording kazoos and other membranous vibrating instruments, (unfortunately there are no amusing stories about Stu missing his station and ending up in Northern Wales - Sorry!)
Of course there were the occasional evenings when he'd missed his train (this was mainly because he couldn't tear himself away from such things as; particularly hilarious vocal effects which could make Barry White sound like a Grampa Smurf and Kate Bush sound like Satan.) But these jocular activities were soon forgotten as he attempted to huddle, with 40 other rain-soaked commuters, under the meter square of plastic sheet that was Hayle platform shelter.
Stu decided towards the end of this course to apply for one of the country's leading multimedia degrees 'Media Lab Arts' at the University of Plymouth. However anticipating that a full time degree just wouldn't be enough work, Stu began preparations to set up his own business as well. One business plan (about the size of a small novel), a lot of suit wearing, several bank managers/charitable organisations later, the shopping began. In June 1998 Tanglewood Recording Studio was founded.

Nowadays, Stu can be found either teaching (C&G/BTEC) Creative Sound Engineering at Deep Blue Sound in Plymouth, teaching private guitar of bass guitar lessons at the studio, recording voice overs, bands, etc. or more usually playing lead guitar and writing for/recording/producing our band, 'Morgan'.
The combination of Stu's guitar playing and teaching led him to develop a set of e-Products for guitarist based on his personal experiences of learning the instrument. This business is called 'The Fretted Apprentice'. Fretted Apprentice Web Site
Up Close & Personal
Stu is a keen musician and can often be found playing virtually any instrument you care to give him. When he's not experimenting with his vast collection of analogue effects pedals, he's usually recording, alphabetically cataloguing his massive CD/DVD collection, or consuming large quantities of tea and Linda McCartney products. He would say he has is affiliated to no religion, although, over the years, he has amassed a rather large collection of Buddha's and books on Zen (Now you know what to get him for his birthday! 18th July)

So there you have a little insight into who I am and what I do. Thanks to Jo for writing that. (I feel I should mention that Jo runs her own business Morgan's Shoppe for those of you on a Pagan/Wicca/Alternate spiritual path, here: Morgan's Shoppe Web Site)
So that's me. If anyone wants to find out any more about my businesses or how I can be of service to you and your musicial aspirations - please don't hesitate to contact me.

Books, I quote (a lot):
Sun Tzu 'The Art of War'
Lao Tzu 'Tao Te Ching' (esp. Chapter 36)
Kahlil Girban 'The Prophet'
Robert M. Pirsig 'Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance
The cliche is to end on some quotes, so here I go with the Zen stuff:
"Before enlightenment, chop wood and carry water.
After enlightenment, chop wood and carry water."
"Always seek balance and enlightenment in the space between the dark and the light, as one cannot exist without the other."
