Getting A Ferret!
I have finally convinced my mum to let me get a ferret, as long as I pay for and care for the ferrets myself. I have done quite a bit of research and just ordered two books (Ferrets for Dummies and The Ferret), however I do still have a few questions.
Do you think that getting three kits would be too difficult for a first-time owner?
Would it be ok to have ferrets if I am out of the house around six hours from Mon-Fri?
If I do get 2/3 ferrets, would they all use the same place to go to the toilet, or would I need 2/3 litter trays? Also, how often do the litter trays need to be cleaned, and the cage?
I have decided to get the Ferret Nation double cage, with an extension on top, would this be big enough for three ferrets?
And, lastly, which food is the best for ferrets?
Thanks very much,
Katherine

Re: Getting A Ferret!
Hi there
three kits will definitely be too much for a first time owner - most recues wont rehome kits to first timeowners becouse they are hard work - if they are around 6 months old and well handled then they would be fine - I would suggest you start with a pair of ferrets and if they are not neutered you need to be thinking about the costs of that.
the ferret nation is a good cage - they will use the same litter tray usually - tray need to be cleaned out at least once a day - usually morning and evening is best - the cagfe itself usually needs a full clean weekly with all the bedding changed to keep any smell down and the cage healthy - sometimes more often with the bedding is needed - being out is fine so long as you are prepered to spend at least an hour playing and interracting with them out of their cage every day
Dry ferret food is fine for them to have all day every day - keep bowl filled and they will limit intake - fresh meat a an extra or you can feed a totally meat diet but that is harder to make sure they have all the right meat and you must make sure it is removed daily if not eaten especially in the summer - I suggest you contact your nearest rescue for help and support

Re: Getting A Ferret!
Hi, Three ferret will be too much for a first time owner, sorry to say, two would be the best as they love company.
Ferrets also need to be cleaned every day, the ferrets will go to the toilet in one place it may take a while but they will.
Regarding food, JWB james wellbeloved is the ultimate best, its expensive but worth it the poo is healthy and so is the coat of the ferret.
Leaving them.....absolutly fine, just make sure you,see them on a morning, when you get up and pick them up and stroke them, and when you get home, clean then out, and pick them up and stroke them, if your ever passing the cade and one is awake just open the cadge and stroke him/her.(im 15 and i go to school and i have 12 ferrets and there fine alone =) )
A two tier cage would be spot on of two or tree ferrets which ever you decide.
=) good luck
