Bitter spray for biting? Been 'initiated'!
Hi, I've been initiated into the world of ferret parenting this morning!
I've got two 2yo ferrets and have just rescued a kit and a 3yo recent mother of just weaned babes (spaying appointment for next week!). This mother made a good attempt to chop my finger in half this morning - my first time with a really bad bite (she enjoyed the blood I think)!! I don't have a problem with that, it was my fault - I'm an experienced ferret person and should have known better with a new one.
I've seen bitter spray mentioned and heard bitter apple. What is this and is there any disadvantage to using it, with the other techniques - my one boy responds well to 'no'. Luckily my first one never has bitten!
Thank you very much.
Sarah

Re: Bitter spray for biting? Been 'initiated'!
well, with my 12 ferrets 3 of them are only 4 months old and they are very flightly the other 9 are all very plasid adults, what we do is if they bite or go to bite, grab the scruff of there neck and make a kkkkkkkkk nosie this is the sound there mother makes when the babies start biting her very hard, its worked with all nine of y adults, just waiting for the other 3 to stop, good luck. =)

Re: Bitter spray for biting? Been 'initiated'!
Hi,thanks very much for that, the baby is learning no and doesn't bite now but takes flying nips! The mum is taking some time to settle in - she doesn't nip, she either bites to'kill' or isn't bothered so it's a bit difficult to try the kkkkkk but I do scruff both her and the baby and will try it next time - I've probably heard the mother 'speaking' to the baby like that and haven't realised in all the squealing that's going on too. I suspect that the mum's come from somewhere that was very rough, plus she's used to getting raw meat as I give it intermittently and she rips into it whereas my boys can take it or leave it.
12 hey! that's a handful - I have a friend with lots too, plus cats and children - phew, that must all take some handling. I find bringing my four into the house traumatic enough with escapes, plant digging, table jumping, tv controls going missing, anything lying around being stolen! Such an effort to remember to clear the decks properly!
