a few questions

I am trying to decide whether or not I should get a ferret (or two as I believe they like company).

The thing is, I need to determine whether my space is appropriate for a ferret. I live in a quite small flat, and I am concerned that when it comes to play time I have too many nooks and crannies where they could hide or get stuck or ruin things. To what extent can you control play time and where they go/what they do? Or does anyone have any tips on ferret proofing an area/a room? There's a small park in front of my building, so I'd be able to take them outside, but to what extent is this suitable in winter?

I have plenty of time to dedicate to a pet, and I think ferrets would suit me very well, but my concern is that it just wouldn't be fair if I can't give it the space to run around that it needs.

Re: a few questions

Hi skydream:

I live in a 400 square foot apartment, so I know where you are coming from. I purchased a two-level ferret cage. Very pricey, but worth it because your pet will have lots of space to run up, down and all around. It's easy to clean and, because it's more tall than wide, it doesn't take up a lot of space.

Before getting a ferret, you must ferret-proof your home. Hide all electrical cords because they may chew on them. If they can fit their head through an opening, they can get their entire body through. All holes in walls, access behind furniture where cords are, etc., must be sealed or closed off. If you have any potted plants on the floor, before you know it the dirt will be flying, literally. Ferrets are diggers and really enjoy it. I have now given you fair warning!!! If it isn't bolted down, screwed down, tied down, or any other down, they will steal it and you will never find it again.!!!

I hope this helps.
