Plan for the time being - strip down engine fully and check it over - make sure no shrapnel has done any further damage
remove gearbox from car and strip it down to sort out its selection 'issues' then get the car out and running on its new box with old engine (Again !!) in time for Vw action - at least we will have our new slicks to play with !!
