Re: The JagerBug - Club Racecar
we received a nice new pair of doors yesterday from VW Heritage, seems a shame to chop them up!
at least they'll be filler free and reasonably easy
then i pressed on with stripping the paint from the around the screen
and the front scuttle
and i'm afraid we found a hell of a lot of filler
Alex B started tidying up around the top door hinge
fabrication, for the nation (said in a Jamaican accent)
a new seam put it
a view of the drivers side 1/4 panel seam from the other side
I got to work on cleaning up the welds on the bulkhead
whilst Alex got on with the other side top hinge
meanwhile Paul turned up and started getting the front quarter panels ready to be offered up, removing the primer so it can be tacked into place
GT Rich had also arrived and sparked up the blow lamp to strip under the bonnet
and 3 guesses what Graeme was up to, yup, stripping down yet another gearbox! (he can do it in his sleep now you know )
then it was time to clean up inside of here before the quater panel goes on
the welds were ground back and the panels cleaned
then some primer was applied by alex to keep it all nice and rust free
the finished prepped area
time to start putting the front end back together
this was just a trial fit to make sure everything lines up
bolted the beam back in to check how much can be chopped from it
the circlip kid in action
new bonnet trial fit
Rich praying it will all fit together
looking like a beetle again!
amazing how a few new panels speed up the job!
meanwhile, Graeme gets to work on the gearbox with his brand new shiny tool
however
it was impossible to get an idea of how the bonnet will fit as the front skuttle was so out of shape. it has had a new piece put in at some point and the amount of filler i removed meant it has to come out!
so, alex drilled out the spot welds
and a donar skuttle was cut off one of our spare rooves
the old skuttle being cut out
the joy of air tools!
skuttle removed!
Rich and I cracked on with the orbital wire brush to find the spot welds on the donar skuttle panel (the orbital wire brush is one of my favourite tools as you can see! )
whilst Al did a bit of hammer and dolly work to straighten out the lip
then Rich attacked the donar skuttle with the spot weld drill, this beetle must have been the special edition titanium reinforced type as he had great difficulty drilling through it
there were a fair few welds too!
so first job tomorrow is to cut and fit the skuttle so the front quarters can be welded into place
then onto the rear quarters, and if we have time, a start on the roof chop!
we've got plenty of donars for that!
