New to forum

Hi All,
The past few months I have been reading quite a bit about FOR's and trying to learn all I can before I jump into them.
I only keep Parlor Rollers but am really considering getting some FOR's and training them to a portable kitbox. Our backyard is way overgrown with trees and flying them from the house wouldn't be much fun. What size loft would you all recommend for a couple of pairs? What would be a good bird to train as a dropper?
Just a few of the many questions I will be sending your way in the future.

4' X 8' works well for a few birds easy to build with one sheet of plywood for the floor. Make it 6" or so taller than you are to keep the birds less wild, with a 6' X 3" avary. That size is easy to add on of you need more room.
Best of luck any more question feel free to ask?
Yours in the Sport
Richard

Hey Mark! Welcome!
Go to the FORS Auction site and take a look at the portable fly box that Ed McMoran built it is as good as I have seen. I got one of the two on the auction, I use a white Indian Fantail as a dropper. Nico Girard has some good picts on his site of his fly box and several used in the European OR competitions

Thanks fellas !! Man,those kit boxes are sweeeeet! Even the thought of being able to take the birds around and having them trained to drop into one really trips my trigger!
My wife, daughter, and I go to alot of horse shows during the summer(they show,I am the pitcrew, lol)but when I'm not doing that I have some kickback time and flying birds while I'm doing that would be awesome.
Hopefully I'll be able to sell some young Parlors at the shows we are going to and get some money saved up for some OR's.
I've done fairly well competing with them so I sure hope I 'll be able to.Well, better go and pick up my daughter talk to you guys later....

Remember (not to rain on your parade) flying portable kits is an art and sometimes you let the birds up & goodbye! Just telling you if it happens that is the "cost of doing business". so you raise more and away you go!
     Keep the questions comming!

P.S. Where are you? I have Morgan horses.

Hey Mark, emoticon and everyone else,
Just wanted to add a story about my first attempt with the portable kit boxs.
I lost 16 birds in 1 day flying them out of a portable.I was set up in a field at a local convience store about 1/8 mile from my farm.I released 3 birds at a time and they all flew very well but disappeared into the clouds. After doing this 3 more times and loosing 12 birds total, i decided it was time to bring out the experienced troops and release them. The troops are my everyday flyers from the farm kit boxs. They know the entire neighborhood from over a years flying abilities and unsuccessful BOP attacks. The troops[fehrholz line from Alan Blevin] which went straight up and started to do their thing.I collapsed the portable box and started heading to the farm where i let out an additional 23 birds[birms].Long story short; All birds returned to the farm except for 2 of my best almond fehrholz line of birds.I was overjoyed to see that most came back within 1 hours but twice as happy that evening when the 2 almonds came out of nowhere.
Point is; FOR's always seem to amaze me and are totally unpredictable in what they really can do.I learn from them every day.
I do not recommend anyone doing what i do because the results are not always this good and i am known to do some crazy stuff with my birds like sending them up when i spot Bop's.I learned that from Paul [sippi] who also enjoys a good chase and escape.
The fehrholz line seems to have a routing system of their own and i have a few that actually try and harrass the bop's but not always with the best results. emoticon
aren't ya'll glad i made this a long story short? emoticon emoticon

Thanks for the info !
I have read about all I can find about flying out of the portables.I am kind of a research junkie when it comes to pigeons,LOL.
I know some about the potential losses and will accept them if/when it happens.
My dues for the club are on their way and I haven't even bought any OR's yet.
