What inspired you?
What inspired you to get started in Oriental Rollers?
For me it was one bird I saw back in about 1970 when I was a kid. This old guy back in my home town in Iowa always had the coolest Pigeons around. Of course "around" was in the neighborhood. But back then there was someone on every corner that raised Pigeons. Anyway, this guy had some OR's and one of them was sitting on a wire. It was a Classical Almond with great ground color. When I saw that bird, it was love at first sight. It made such an impression on me I still remember that bird to this day. That one bird sitting on that wire is what inspired my interest.

Re: What inspired you?
My brother raised pigeons in the early 50's and I had tumblers in the mid 50's. That lasted 3 years when a devastating disease hit my loft and put me out of the pigeon raising. Since then, raising pigeons and their health has made major strides, so I began thinking about raising tumblers again after 50 some years. I browsed many sites and lofts on the web. Turkish tumblers were uppermost on my list. Those were way out of my price line. Then one day I found a site called Circus Lofts. After reading about oriental rollers and their abilities, the decision was made. I still wanted muffed birds, but could not pass on the OR's. I read all I could about them and joined this club. Learned what I could and built a loft. With the help of the fine club members here with many how to tips, I have 8 Orientals and no regrets. I am still learning though. These birds are not like normal birds in the loft. Aggressive might not describe them fully. Sometimes I think they don't even like themselves. After losing one to a hawk, I do see they are as vulnerable to attack as any pigeon, but hopefully next years young will be the beginning of a hawk proof kit if that's possible. I close by saying thank you to all the members here...

Re: What inspired you?
The thing that inspired me to raise FORS is ,"they is purty". I saw some pictures of them, liked what I saw then started reading everything I could find out about them. That means I even hit this forum up alot. I don't think there is vary much I didn't read on here. Ant how it all added up that I had to have some of these things.
Now that the weather has changed to colder the hawks don't seem to be around and if it would stop raining for a while I'll fly them some more. They really do good if there is a little wind, even the roof sitters got up to fly in the wind. They didn't stay up long but they did get up. I am hoping to have the same good luck with the Doneks. Re: What inspired you?
Right here on this forum is what inspired me to acquire Oriental Rollers. When I read about the variety of their air antics and the variety of colours ORs come in,I knew I had to have some.

That is a big part of it. We can say it's "performance only" but a big part of the traditional appeal of the FOR is their beauty, and grace on the ground. That is part of the breed that should never be lost. No matter how good the birds perform, without them being "perdy" too we have lost a part of the tradition of the breed.

Re: What inspired you?
After accidentally being introduced to BR's I was looking for birds to train my pups, the late Mr. Sam Pate, gave me 6 pair, after he was sure I would stick with it. I pestered him for a year trying to buy some! Nothin doing!
Became friends with DonB and he has mentored me thru the rough spots!
DonB and I made a trip down to Sippi's and after I saw his Husbands and Fehrholz perform, I was hooked!
Fehrholz from Alan and OR's from Amir just set the hook deeper, think I may be gut hooked! LOL

Re: What inspired you?
Shortly after I got my B/h's, I was surfen the net for some reading materials and came across this article:
"Birmingham Roller Guardians" by Paul Sisk
I thought what a great idea to incorporate thses birds in my loft. So, I got some from Alan and later obtained some from Amir. The rest is history.
