What Do You Call It? My birds are starting to do their thing now. They have just been flying from the loft roof to the house until the last few days. Yesterday, they flew up in a tree in my neighbor's yard and stayed there for a long time. A hawk flew by and they took off and flew way high. One black hasn't returned from that. Today, they were flying and kept going really high they they would pull their wings behind their back in a deep "V" and just free fall. There was no spinning, just falling. It looked like fun. What do you all call that move?

Re: What Do You Call It? They are tail riding which in young birds is a precursor to rolling. My theory (unproven yet) is that the deeper they tail ride the deeper they roll. Watch them and see. Some of my Galati's will do it for a hundred feet sometimes. I had one do it yesterday from about a hundred feet up and he was right over my lawn chair. It looked like he was going to hit me right in the face. I was just about to evacuate when he pulled out.
Re: What Do You Call It? I thought that was what you all were calling "tail-riding." I had never witnessed that before. I can't wait until they start rolling. They are doing some back-flips but that is about it. I tried to get some pictures of them in flight. They were really high and they didn't turn out too good but I posted a couple below. You can see the others at My SmugMug Page.

Re: What Do You Call It? Yeah, Nick, I can't wait! I checked the nest boxes and I have had five more hatch since I last checked. I also found an egg in a box that must have come from one of the pencils. It was her first egg and I don't think she has a steady beau. So, I put the egg under my White Carneau pair who just laid. I am finally starting to get a return on my efforts.
