Flying in the Rain.

On the west coast of B.C. here we get alot of rain.Liquid sunshine. We don't tan here,we rust.Ya know how when Oriental Rollers take a bath they look real raggy for a while and don't dry out so quick as other breeds. This is obviously because of the lack of an oil gland on ORs and the inability to shed water like most birds.Yesterday I put some young birds up in a rain shower and they sure did not want to fly, unlike my BRs which flew for 35 minutes in the rain yesterday.Do you think this is because of their feathers being wet they can't fly as well?

I believe that to be the case Kelly, we have gotten 17" of rain over the last two weeks, after your post I went out to compare my BR's to my OR's they can at will sit in the flight pen attached to my kit box exposed to the rain, the BR's are slick and dandy looking, the OR's rather bedraggled! I didn't try to fly as the wind was high and heavy rain moving in and through but your observation I think is correct.
I've never tried to fly the OR's in light rain or mist but the BR's seem to love it!

Yeah, with my BRs they love it and I get real nice performance with them in an easy rain, low ceiling especially because there is less likelihood of an attack and the birds seem more relaxed. Not so with the ORs at all from the little I've seen.Today I put up the 6ORs and it was blowing pretty good outta the NW sunny skies and they flew totally different than yesterday in the rain.Kitting nice and some deep tight winged tailride sort of dives to get back down near the loft.
