Study, Plan, Do
Study, Plan and Do is the strategy I try to apply in my Pigeon Hoby.
I picked OR ower 20 years ago and beside, continous lerning abot pigeons biology, helth, diet, genetics, housing.... in general, I start reserching about their origins as an idea (mentality of those who create them) and as a bird. Reserch the sources of informations, birds, all you need today.
Than you set goal, steps and time frame to acheive it. My goal requires 5 to 6 years to work it out.
An then you do it.
One can set a plan to find the best birds that exsist, buy them, and then produce the best birds over and over.
Or one can gradualy bring in best available, and produce and sort out.
Either way need time and money; Your choice.
Samir

Re: Study, Plan, Do
Samir you are a man after my own heart. I have been bringing in families and working to improve them for ten years.
I breed them for what I want from them but mainly I keep them pure in lineage. I have enjoyed collecting different families and seeing the diversity between them.

Re: Study, Plan, Do
Now I'm entering third year of program. For a short while touught that proces goes faster, but than realized, based on progres so far, it is only realistic to expect succes in set timeframe. This faze was gathering material. All is in place, except one or two kite hens, but Zeljko Talanga have just right stuf, so I'll get them too.
Going for three rounds and than flying into play-offs.

Re: Study, Plan, Do
Thanks Nik
I was going to videotape my birds last year but a cooperhawk that was siting on the next door tree cut me short. Amir caried out the idea, he has no big trees in imediate surounding and was able to fly longer. But this Jun, Julie I am going to post videos of my birds in the air. Amirs and my birds are prudy much same, parts of the same project.
Well "Project" is wrong term for OR, it is more a newer ending process to produce perfect bird. The 5-6 years is my timeframe to establish an adequate foundation of breeders.
Zeljko Talanga birds are whole diferent league. Amir have spend a day or two couple years ago at Zeljkos place and watch the birds. Awsome.

Samir,Great,I can't wait to see your videos! Yes,A coopers hawk around could make the video be pretty short. I emailed Zeljko a few times last year, seems like a good guy. Nick

Re: Study, Plan, Do
We (people) tend to go too far sometimes with accomodations, and special recipes, and in process often forget the starting point.
Pigeon is an animal, with its natural needs.
Back in my old country I had chance to observe "wild" pigeons, both rock and field type, and than compare and try to recognize origin of some behavior in my pigeons.
For example I noticed that a colony grows to a size that a sertain space alows and then after that flock size stay stable as long the spase remains same. This made me beleive that we have to figure optimum spase for our birds to get best breeding results. I was regularly visiting frends lofts and noticed that those who had biger lofts to size of flock were having less young birds.
I was prone to help building nest, when I stoped I found that they are doing it much faster better and it is part of their routine, which keaps pair thogether.
My Orientals there, and here to, love to walk, lay in grass, peck and find food in garden more than any other breeds. Their colors, body type, flying pathern made me beleive that they descend from "Field Pigeon" rather than from Rock Pigeon.
I do beleive that within pigeon flock exist some sort of hierarchy, ranks and files. It is formed in loft on the ground and function in the air - each bird have a place and if can't assume that position won't perform to its potentials.
Well "Kit Box" would eliminate this kind of individual developement and create a more uniform Kit (BR goal), and supres individual development. I decide to try a kit box to test.

Re: Study, Plan, Do
In response to your ramblings about space and breeders,I have 3 pair of ORs in an 4ftX8ft breeder pen with individual wire cages 16" high 20"deep and 30" long. There is one pair of fantails on the floor nesting in a plywood box. There is a flypen 4'x4'x3'high.I think one more pair of ORs would fit comfortably in one more individual screwed to the wall.More than this and I think they would be cramped for space. In another loft the same size,I have had up to 9 pair of Birmingham Rollers and they are good with that space.

Sorry Samir.Just a figure of speech.Rambling is when one is speaking what is going on in ones mind.Nothing wrong with it.Kind of like thinking out loud.
