Re: Study, Plan, Do
OK Kel (I thought it means complaining)
Any way in my opinion both "owersizing" loft and owecrowding birds have negative efect on number of young birds produced.
More light, and space make us feel better. Birds, when they can, choose smaler, darker spot to make home.

Re: Study, Plan, Do
One of the problems of not having "enough" birds in a smaller loft is that the dominant cоck will sometimes claim the whole loft as his domain. This is stressful to the other birds as he fights with all the other cоcks and they have no safe zone. When you have the "right" number of pairs, the cоcks have to spend more time driving their hens to keep them faithful and don't have as much time to fight or another cоck may step in on their hen.Helps keep your pairs pretty faithful.(the only way to be 100% sure is induvidual breeding pens) Overcrowding is just as bad and probably worse. All the birds are under constant stress, wich is VERY bad for them. Nick

Re: Study, Plan, Do
Samir,
How do you decide how much space is needed? Can you build a loft then just keep adding pairs until it "feels" right? I would hate to try and do it that way, especially since i have no experience. I'm not confident that I would know enough.

Re: Study, Plan, Do
My loft is 8'x8'. When I started I use only one half of it. As number of pigeons went up I expand space. I beleive that my loft has 30 to 35 pairs of OR capacity. Area is partitiond there is section for young birds.
Now i'm planing to build adition for young birds separately as the number of birds will get closer to capacity.

Re: Study, Plan, Do
Some guys use LxWxH divided by 15 to give each bird enough space. Going by that formula a loft 8x8x7 high is enough room for about 30 pigeons total or to breed about 7 pairs comfortably. The 7 pair plus one round gives you 28 birds. That's if you pull the youngsters to a young bird loft or kitbox after each round. If you add a 4x8x7 flypen to the loft it goes up to about 45 birds. Just like everything else in the hobby everyone has a way that works best for them. I like this formula, seems to work out good, but I think 1 more pair would work out fine,so in an 8x8,I would breed 8 pairs. Nick

Re: Study, Plan, Do
Thank you all.
Taking all of that in mind then my current thoughts would give me space for 18 birds or maybe 5 pairs. That sounds like a workable size. I don't want to try too much at first but i still want enough space to grow for a little while.
Thank you for the help.

Re: Study, Plan, Do
I thought the "Rule of the Thumb" was LxW(floor space) divided by 1.5 plus flypen. 8x8=64/1.5=42.7 birds. Almost the same as Nicks' formula.
FYI: I am still trying to raise a .7 bird.
My three breeding sections are 6x8=48/1.5=32 birds.I have 13 nest boxes in each section but only have 10 pair per section with three nest boxes closed. (Max. of 10 pairs seems to work best.) When babies are weaned they come out either into one of the four kit boxes or two 6x8 odd bird sections.
