Re: Breeding

It got below freezing here a few times last week and I lost four of the seven young. But, the three that are left have plenty of feathers and they should make it. I would separate my birds but I don't have space! I need a bigger loft. And a bigger shop. And a bigger house. And more land. I need to win the lottery...

I put my birds together in late Feb and split them up end of May or June. I think it's healthier all around, squeaks and breeders. Nick

Re: Breeding

We had a hard freeze last night and I lost another squeaker. I am down to two. But, they are in the same nest and they have lots of feathers. If it is supposed to get cold again tonight, I may bring them in.

Re: Breeding

I'm sort of limited with space or number of birds that I can have around. I dont want to drow too much unnecesary attention in neighborhood. My loft is 8'x 8', 7' high inside. It is built with double bords and insulation between, a smole atic and insulaton there too. Last winter I had an electic utility heater set on 55F turned on from 6 PM to 10 PM. Water newer froze. This sumer a shed is atached and covered with PVC siding. I could start breeding any time but question is when and how many yong ones you want and need. I'm always trying to put birds up in the aer as yung as posible. Here in Michigan you cant do much before may, so by may I prefer birds up to two monts old. Those that huch out in august usualy won't get much chance for proper training. This year I went for extra round hoping for hens and got them but also birds that are going to be "slow developers".

Even if climat and BOP situaton alows to bred all year around it is good to separate them for a while.

By the way I still have extra 10 birds if someone is interested can email or PM for info.

Samir

Re: Breeding

I have read that they can live in temps as low as -40.Barn pigeons in the prairies seem to do quite well. The most critical time for the young ones is when they have those pinfeathers about ten days old and the parents don't sit on them all through the night. Some folk put those hand warmers in the nest to keep things warm enough on those really cold nights.

Re: Breeding

Here in AZ this is our breeding season. A lot of the guys break up their pairs in the summer because of the heat and put them together again for breeding in the winter and breed all winter and spring. There's no need to fear those cold 40 and 50 degree nights.
