hand raising squabs

Has anyone hand raised squabs? I have done a lot of them and I am currently raising three. But I have never raised any from the egg. My main question is if anyone has tried hand raising squabs from the egg? I have two from a very rare and expensive pair. So far, it's quite an experience.

OOOOH man,you gotta be there all the day.Alot of work.I've only given extra food by way of a plastic syringe to ones that have been small compared to their nestmate.I used pigeon pellets ground up in the coffee grinder and a little warm water added. How are you doing it Alan?

Re: hand raising squabs

The birds that have pin feathers are easy. They need to be fed three times per day. I grind up Pigeon Pellets in the blender to a powder and keep about 10 lbs on hand at all times. I then mix the powdered pellets with slightly warm water. I use about 1/3 pellets and 2/3 water in the mix. I then crop feed them with a Turkey Baster. I have very good success with this method.

The birds right out of the egg are another story. They need to be fed a special formula 5 times per day with water about 105 degrees and the squabs need to be kept in the incubator at 100 degrees. I hatch a lot of birds in the incubator but this is the first attempt I have made at hand feeding them right out of the egg. I do it the same way but use Roudybush's Squab formula. It's 50% protein. I use a very thin eye dropper and crop feed them. It's a very delicate operation. So far, so good but they don't seem like they are growing as fast as they should.

This will also come in handy when the parents at times mysteriously don't feed the hatchlings correctly. You can give them a feeding or two along the way to give them a boost.

It's too big for squabs just hatched but not birds a little older. The first one I use for hatchlings is a fine eye dropper. As the squab grows I upsize to a syringe with a small piece of aquarium air line tubing attached and then as it gets older, I use a Turkey baster.

I don’t understand… The baby squab, no matter what age they are, always go down the throat of the feeding bird. Not the other way around! At least in my loft, no matter what the breed. The parent up-chucks the food, opens their mouth and the squabs dive down the parents throat after the food. Foods gone, baby goes back to sleep. I’d be afraid I’d send the food/ water down the wrong pipe and get it into the lungs. I read, where people shipping over long distances, force water down the throat for the trip. But I’ve never understood how it’s done. I’d probably end up w/ drowned birds..
Now when I raised canaries, I used to watch as the parents would go down the throats of their babies. So when I got into pigeons, I was surprised to find they’re just the opposite.

Yes, when i open my birds mouth/beaks, there is 2 holes. which one does it go down? And hwo do people shove food down their birds throats without it going into their lungs. Or forcefeed baby food?

Like Bill said, id be afraid it goes down the wrong pipe. LOL emoticon

All I can add is it works.Goes down the right pipe like. Was just out stuffing peas and corn down the yap of a squeaker being weaned in the kitbox and all it was eating was milo so thought I would supplement it's diet a bit.Open beak, put in pea, close beak, down it goes.Same thing with a mouth and throat full of syringed mush, cept the mush goes down easier.
